Only Ovechkin Has More Goals Than Marleau The Past 3 Seasons

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=369581

Patrick Marleau seems to face a lot of criticism for a player with 119 goals over the last three seasons, during which time Alexander Ovechkin is the only one to light the lamp more often.

Marleau is somewhat a victim of being in San Jose for so many playoff defeats and that seems to generate frustration, rather than appreciation for a player that has scored at least 30 goals in five of the last six seasons and has missed a total of 31 games in 13 NHL seasons.

I was actually thinking about Patty and that number recently. It's pretty damn impressive.

And clearly we don't have any team needs.

nobody should have a problem with his play during the regular season (its a long season, and all players get bored during it, so hot and cold streaks will happen more freaquently). its the getting bored/uninspired play that happens in the playoffs that make people mad at him. yes he will put up good goal numbers in the playoffs, but he will also go through some times entire series where he looks and acts like he is just going for a casual skate with his kids.

considering 3 years ago was stamkos's down year it makes sense.

the past 2 years stamkos is #2, but adding that 3rd year skews it a bit. since stamkos in his rookie year only put up 23.

Stamkos only had 5 in the second half this year as well. Not so good. He isn't getting his one-timers.

next year will tell if stamkos is really as good as people say he is. he really needs to add a 2nd dimension to his game (one of the biggest reasons why a player on pace for 60 goals, wasn't selected for the olympics). be it defensive game, or be it another way of scoring he needs to do something else.

I agree. I am waiting on both he and AO. SS looked OK but not great in the playoffs. It's like every team out there has figured who has the one-timers and how to stop them. VL was actually getting a few one-timer opportunities in the playoffs.

AO needs to stop being a fatass. That'll help.

i know lecavalier got a few in close, but those i don't count really as one timers (especially the ones stamkos needs to get away from).

lecavalier will rarely ever use a one timer like stamkos tries to score on. for one he doesn't have the shot needed to pull them off regularly, and he's smart enough to know the chances are very low of him scoring if he tries.

Yeah, I noticed close on VL. That may be because he can't convert from farther. I was just surprised that he was open enough.

KM,
AO is anything but fat. What they need to do is work on offensive plays and not be so repetitive. A summer spent working on that with Backstrom, Knuble and Semin might do the Caps a lot of good. BB doesn't seem to have a lot of originality. It's more like learning how to utilize teammates and possibly some input from a creative type.

Dude is only a couple of pounds away from a beer gut - there is no reason for him to be what he is right now.

Well he does eat his mom's cooking every day at home and brings his PS3 with him on the road.

Typical Marleau fanboy thread.

Crosby missed most of the season, Malkin missed a bunch of games the last 3 years and there are others. Not to mention he's been on a line with Jumbo so you'd expect him to pot some goals.

This isn't a good way to analyze whether or not he's been productive. Keep in mind I'm not saying he hasn't been good the last three...but he isn't close to the guys mentioned above and he just came off an absolutely terrible post-season.

Typical Marleau-hater post.

Seriously, what does the guy have to do for some people to stop bagging on him?

EDIT: inb4 win a SC.

Stamkos was 7-17=24 in the 31 games after the AGG...in his first 38 games he had 31 goals. In his last 44 games he had 14.

Huh. Now that I think about it (and have seen him play more) you're totally right.

I could make some tasteless joke right now but I'm a classy hockey fan

That's what I get for listening to commentators. Still a lot down. They may have meant after ASG instead of mathematical half and still got it wrong.

I'd say show the heart/hustle that Big Man showed this postseason.

Typical Marleau hater?? Try, Realist.

I actually like him. I started liking him about 4 years ago when he decided to start scoring goals.... but really it was the switch to wing that made him look better in my eyes.

Lets' see what does he have to?....................Play like he doesn't have money on the opposing team during the playoffs. Pretty simple actually. I was at more than a couple of playoff games where you could see him coasting (literally, gliding away from the puck) all game long. Not trying to get open, not back checking, turning the puck over without pressure. It was like he literally trying to throw the games.
