It's just depressing to think about. Folks laughed when he was signed, and so he spent that first year putting every last scrap of effort into proving all his critics wrong, and it was GLORIOUS...

...and then he spent the next two years seemingly equally determined to prove them all right.

Eesh... I remember this. Proof that the whole does not always equal the sum of its parts.

Not when you consider, if not for Campbell's contract, they would still have a plethora of secondary skilled players on the team: Ladd, Byfuglien, Wisniewski, etc, etc. His contract is the one mistake in their very good recent track record, had they not panick 3 yrs ago, and signed him to an obscene deal, they could have dominated WC for several years to come.

That would be because Sundin played a huge role in Kesler developing into the player he is today. Unfortunately he was injured in the playoffs which limited his effectiveness against Chicago.

Used to love watching him play for the Monarchs. So much nasty in that guy. Tried to much to be agressive sometimes though.

First one that popped in my head was Sean Avery to Dallas.

He gave up a series of back-breaking goals in 2003. Not what you want to see from the highest paid goalie in the NHL while the guy across the rink making 1/10 his salary is putting on a show.

He was top notch in 2004 though.

Pavol Demitra in Vancouver.
He was our biggest Free Agent signing in awhile, and barely able to stay healthy.
Tho he did get Gaborik to buy a house in Vancouver

A 50 point season for a 3m dollar cap hit is good value.

The circumstances of him resigning were strange, not disappointing.

As for Bouwmeester, he is not what he was expected to be offensively but he is still our #1 defensemen so their are far worse option's out there.

Khabibulin and Souray. I thought we were going to be contending with an "elite" goalie and an "all-star" defenseman... How wrong was I lol

Probably more performance for 1.8 or so million, and for so long.
Especially when you consider most tough guys can be had each summer for around 600K to 1 million.
Shelley seemed non-exsistent on a Flyers team that can't spare any cap space on a bench warmer.

It was a bad signing, but we really have nothing to lose at this point. We have no real cap issues, so we might as well see what he can do next year.

The entire team, except for Karlsson, was on a slump this season.

For the Habs I would say Spacek has to be up there. He was coming off a good year in Buffalo and was supposed to be a decent top4 D for us. He was below average at best and stunk very bad at worst.

There were stretches in the last two seasons were he was a complete liability. The guy would lose 9 puck battles out of 10...

Other than that no other signings pop up in my mind. Habs haven't been known for big free agent signings other than two years ago and these guys ended up being great for us (except Spacek). I don't think anyone expects much of the yearly ''lets sign/trade for an over the hill third centermen that ends up on the fourth line'' so that can't be a disappointment source (I'm talking about the Bonks, Halperns and Smolinskis of this world). The Sundin, Hossa etc non-signings have been far worse

I agree with this 100%, if you look at Detroit stats, he has the lowest GAA in the playoffs for the Wings.

Also, how can anyone forget Uwe Krupp for Detroit, talk about awful and injury plagued.

Cristobal Huet has to be high on the Hawks list. He was fantastic for the Habs, going as far as being a top five goaltender that season for a large stretch. After being traded he was stellar for Washington but never once found a fraction of consistency when he went to Chicago.

Bouwmeester would be another recent signing gone wrong. He was easily an offensive bomb with Florida but since moving to Calgary, the guy has fallen to pieces.
