He's not worth 9 mill and he's already won a cup. He might not be motivated and I would also say Kesler is the better player so I don't think he wants to be the 3rd center. Also when you preach that players should take less salary to better the team then you shouldn't be handing out a contract that size to a player who wouldn't even be the 2nd best player at his position.

Exactly this. Throwing that much money at Richards pretty much eliminates any progree Gillis made with Burrows, Kesler, and the Sedins, among others.

Gillis is all about moneyball. Signing under-the-radar guys to cheap contracts. Torres (1) and Malhotra (2.5) paid off last year, IMO.

To an extent. It didnt work. They didnt win. Their biggest shortcoming was a top 6 player to have a regular shift with Kesler.

Under-the-radar guys are not going to cut it.

Lets put the best defensive forward in the league on the wing, and throw disgusting amounts of money at Richards to centre our second line... Please.

We need grit and scoring on the 2nd line.

I like you.

God, what I'd do for a big, hard-ass, fast scoring winger for Kesler. A guy along the lines of Chris Stewart would be amazing. /pipedream

Hodgson, Schneider, 1st 2012 for Evander Kane would make me giddy.

6'2'', big frame, Vancouver boy, played for the giants, still on his ELC, hard nosed and great hands.

It's too bad Winnipeg realizes all of this too and won't let him go. I would seriously overpay for that kid.

Depth wasn't the problem in the playoffs, an injured defense and inability to score was.

"On the day of free agency, newly appointed general manager Mike Gillis of the Vancouver Canucks offered Sundin a lucrative two-year, $20 million contract which, if signed, would have made him the highest paid player in the NHL. "

Personally I think gillis had inside knowledge that sundin Would hold out and not sign for 2 years.

If we sign Brad Richards I'll be absolutely shocked. It's just not going to happen.

Sedin Sedin Burrows, 6.1+6.1+2= 14.2
Higgins Kesler Hodgson, 2+5+1.66=8.66
Hansen Malhotra Samuelsson, 1+2.5+2.5=6
Torres Lapierre Oreskovic 1*+1.3*+0.575= 2.875*
Glass 0.8*

Edler Ehrhoff 3.25+5=8.25
Hamhuis Bieksa 4.5+ 4=8.5
Ballard Salo 4.2+2*=6.2*
Tanev 0.9

Luongo 5.3
Schneider 0.9

LTIR Raymond 2.5

Cap = 64 million total.
Team total 62.585 without Raymond
65.785 with Raymond.

Waiving Glass, and sending Tanev down accomplishes a 63.285 Cap total.

My idea is bring back the same lineup that got us to the Finals, with a slight tweak and more depth again this season.
Hodgson to the wing of Kesler gives him a decent skilled player who I'd like to try there until at the very least Mason Raymond is healthy.

Hansen gets a raise since he's an RFA, Torres re-signs at the same amount for another shot at the Cup. Lapierre gets a small raise as well being an RFA.

That's the problem, you want a fast scoring winger but absolutely none are available...but Kesler can be a big, hard-ass, fast scoring winger...

So all we need to do is find someone that can replace Kesler at centre right? Like Brad Richards!

I know the odds of us getting B. Richards are a long shot but honestly, the odds of us getting a guy like C. Stewart, M. Lucic, Ladd, or R. Nash are even longer.

A 2nd line of with Higgins and Hodgson is not enough scoring depth. Most teams can shutdown one line in the playoffs (see Sedins, Toews, M. Richards, and Crosby in their most recent finals) that's why we need a 2nd line we can depend on for offense, that's what we needed against Boston and never got it.
