The 42-man roster includes nine invitees, three of whom come from Western New York. Forward Matt Zarbo (Grand Island, NY) had 14 points in 28 games for Clarkson University last season, after spending the previous two years in the USHL; 22-year-old blueliner Nick Bailen (Fredonia, NY) played for RPI last year, and finished with 36 points in 38 games; and goaltender John Cullen (Hamburg, NY) who posted a record of 15-14-2, while splitting his time in the OHL last year with Windsor and Sarnia.

Another notable camp invitee is 6-foot-4, 214 pound left winger Geordie Wudrick. A third-round pick (88th overall) of the Los Angeles Kings in the 2008 Entry Draft, Wudrick was among the WHL leaders with 43 goals in 71 games for the Kelowna Rockets last season.

The only absentee so far is Joel Armia, Buffalo’s first-round selection (16th overall) in this year’s draft. It’s still unclear if the native of Pori, Finland, will be attending camp at any point this week. Goaltender Nathan Lieuwen and forward Colin Jacobs are in camp, but both missed the first day of workouts with undisclosed injuries.

Quick roster thoughts -

Beyers plays with Lepkowski in Barrie, on Schiefele's wing if I recall the name correctly.

Did TBN mis-spell Lagace's name (again)? Or did the team (again)?

If they're keeping their old format (as it appears they are), anyone past their fourth year is not here.

No Brian Roloff. Varone open audition?

No Legault. I suspect he's not in their plans any longer.

Also, if the Knight's Michael Houser is there, he needs an asterisk too -- he's not Sabre property and is still (like Beyers) draft eligible.

Some defensive pairings I'd like to see:

Brennan-Schiestel (possible top-pairing in Rochester)

McNabb-Pysyk (the WHL'ers, possible future Sabres pairing)

Crawford-Biega (possible third pairing in Rochester)

Lepkowski-JGL (some physicality coupled with JGL's offensive prowess)

Can someone enlighten me as to how we can get prospects from other teams at our camp ? Why would they be here ? For us to look at for possible future trades ?

And, what happens if one of their prospects gets hurt while here ?

So there are a bunch of non-Sabre guys here:

Phil Varone, C, Erie, who was not tendered a contract by the Sharks after being a 5th rounder in '09
Geordie Wudrick, W, Kelowna, also not signed after being a 3rd round pick of the Kings in '08.

John Cullen, G, Windsor Spitfires
Michael Houser, G, London Knights

Steven Beyers, RW, Barrie Colts
John McCarron, F, Lincoln Stars (Cornell commit)
Jonathan Parker, RW, Prince Albert Raiders (Private happy dancing fist pump here)
Matt Zarbo, W, Clarkson

Nick Bailen, D, RPI

Most are free agents since either they can't get drafted or haven't been offered a contract by the team they were drafted and some others can still be drafted.

None of the guys there is property of another NHL team.

Same goes for John McCarron.

The Houser invite is interesting; I thought he'd be drafted and I think he has some potential.
Parker probably has potential too, but I've heard he's not very good defensively.

The invitees are either undrafted or unsigned (Wudrick, Varone).

Nah, he's been to all of these that the method they have for this allows. I suspect he's still in their plans and depending on how he starts the year could be anywere from 8th-11th on the depth chart overall.

How is Biega a 4th year pro if last season was his rookie year at the pro level?

Sucks that Armia won't be there, seeing the most recent first round picks play is always fun. I'm probably going to go down on Thursday, stay overnight then watch the Friday session so I don't have to get up early and drive. I guess anything that stands out to me I'll post here.

Looking forward to watch Cattennaci skate in person.

McNabb skates good for a big guy, and Biega seems very aggressive on the puck.

Good God, they better reign Ennis in before he destroys the confidence of the other players.
