6/22/11 - What Are You Booing Gary Bettman For?

Booing Gary Bettman is as natural as rebelling against your parents the first time you get a girlfriend. Everybody does it and there are so many reasons. So with the draft in St. Paul this weekend, what is the reason you booing him?

I don't even have a good reason. Maybe just the general way that the NHL has screwed up in terms of suspensions and player safety. Maybe the failed southern expansion. Maybe losing the North Stars. How about just because it's going to be Friday and I'll have some beer in me?

The point system. How does a magical 3 point come into existence every time there is a overtime game? Doesn't make sense. If they got rid of that there would probably be more trading, making the trade deadline much more interesting. Rather than having 28/30 teams think they can make the playoffs.

I'm booing Bettman because he didn't have the balls to tell the North Stars that they had no legit reason to move, and should have either stayed or sold to a local owner.

Pretty bad when even Bettman himself admitted that as his biggest regret as a rookie NHL commissioner.

He's easily the big-4's least respect-worthy commissioner. Simple as that.

Oh boy, where to start...

-The North Stars Move.
-The third point in overtime (Either moveto straight W-L, return to W-L-T, or adopt Olympic Scoring)
-The fact that we still don't have no-touch or hybrid icing
-The fact that his background is in the NBA, a total joke of a league
-The fact that he absolutely will not, under an circumstances, answer a simple question wit a straight answer unless its 100% on his own terms
-The fact that he is so gung ho on selling the NHL in markets where it just wont take.
-The fact that he appears to have no real plan at all to take advantage of possible work stoppages in the NFL and NBA next season to grow the game and sell it to the sports hungry American public.
-That stupid smug look on his face and the tone he uses when he speaks
-The Northwest SUCKS for regional rivalries
-No plans to add teams to markets that absolutely want them and will make it work
-How he has done nothing to fix blackout radius inconsistencies between games on NHL Center Ice and games on NHL Network
-How he has not mandated that every team make available an HD feed of each game produced so NHL Center Ice can have absolutely every game in HD
-The simple fact that he is Buttman, and deserves to be booed.

I'm with you on that. It's too bad the last round of expansion wasn't a year or two later for Houston because that's a great sports city which would easily embrace a NHL team.

I was thinking about how it would be the perfect time for the NHL to really make a big push.

Just realized that "really saying 'boo-urns'" should have been an option.

I'm not planning on booing him.

I wasn't a fan of the North Stars. I didn't live in the state.
I'm neutral on his handling of the Phoenix situation, considering that local buyers keep popping up and Glendale is covering the losses.
I'm positive on the handling of Atlanta. Sorry. No local buyer.
I'm positive on the handling of discipline lately and the rules changes to keep hitting in the game, but taking steps to protect the players. Immediately changing the rules on icing after Foster's horrible fracture was a great move.

As far as it relates directly to me, personally...
I'm not booing.

I dislike Bettman because he acts dishonest, both him and David Stern give off an aura of superiority and smugness.

This. So much this.

I voted North Stars, but I'll also be booing Southern Expansion, inconsistent discipline rulings, taking so long to get back to Winnipeg, the Phoenix boondoggle, and, oh yeah, canceling an entire season.

I like "stuck in the Northwest" but it's part of a larger problem, and that is way too much bias towards the Northeast. We always seem to get screwed because of things that make life easier/better for the NE teams.

Wouldn't booing Bettman mean you are letting Sheppard off the hook and blaming Bettman for Sheppard's problems?

Find another reason to boo Bettman, can't remove fault from Shep!

When I knew for sure I was going to the draft, I was planning on being really obnoxious and cheering for Bettman. Even though I don't hate him as much as others (especially considering all the commissioners in pro-sport leagues), I realized I couldn't make myself cheer for him. Ha.

Stern has done worse things

- Covered up a betting scandal involving one of his refs
- the 02 Kings/Lakers game 6 debacle and refusal to adresss what was clearly a rigged game
- NBA is in worse financial shape then NHL with far bigger TV deals

Sorry Talon but the reason the North Stars left was Norm Green had a piece of paper signed by John Ziegler stating he could move the club. Gary Bettman had nothing to do with it and so we're booing the wrong guy.

You are correct Bettman did say it was his biggest regret but he had only been Commissioner for a couple of weeks when they moved.

You really have to admit under Bettman the game has never been stronger and more robust. They just got $2 billion over 10 years from NBC. In my wildest dreams I would have never guessed in my life time they would get that much $$$ from a major US network.

When the cup was presented to the Bruins last week it was pretty weak the way Vancouver fans reacted to Bettman. Reason #335 to not like Canuck fans!
