Sounds okay, but I despise divisional matchups in the playoffs. When the Jets were almost always getting matched up with the Oilers it sucked. We had a really good team, but they were just that much better.

No thanks to the uneven division idea. If the NHL wants to go to a four division format, that's fine.... just wait until they expand to 32 (like they clearly want to) so it's even. Uneven divisions in any major professional sport makes zero sense, and it's one of my many complaints about MLB.

I want to say 3 divisions mostly based on time zones, but 4 division of 8 works out better number wise...

That is the only thing I can think of, too.

If there are no added teams, this format will go down in flames. No way it will get implemented. ...and at this point, is it a great idea to add more teams? (What do you all think?)

So what's the differnce? The Oilers were better so they beat the Jets. What difference would it make losing in the first round or losing in the conferance finals to the Oilers. Either way you're not getting the cup.

Uneven divisions could be made more fair by having wild card spots. Ie top 3 from each division make it plus the next best 2 regardless of division.

With 30 teams, one division in each conference will have eight squads while the other will have seven.
How is that possible? If Columbus and Detroit move to east there are only 14 teams in west so they would have two 7 team divisions and east two 8 team divisions

I think it's fine the way it is, just let Columbus and Winnipeg swap conferences and be done with it.

The best part though is a return to doing at least one home-and-home against every team each year. I think it's dumb not to see any given team at all for a few years.

The divisions along with both Detroit and Columbus going east don't quite make perfect sense.

If both Detroit and Columbus go to the east, that would mean 14 Western teams and 16 Eastern teams (counting Winnipeg in the West), so how could each conference both have an 8 and 7 team division? Plus Detroit moving would have to be approved by the BOG, would it not? There's no way that will be a unanimous vote.

Surprise surprise - Bettman likes the NBA model!! Let's get rid of all of the old division names, conference names, legacies and let's Americanize everything! Absolutely insane!

82 game schedule, at least 2 games against every team in the league, one 8 team division and one 7 team division in each conference. That schedule is pretty easy. A team in an 7 team division plays 4 times against division opponents, 3 times against conference opponents, and 2 times against the other conference. A team in an 8 team division plays the same, except there’s one division team they only play 3 times.

If it ever becomes a 32 game league, 4 against division, 2 against the other 24 teams, and you get 2 games against historical opponents or whatever.

I'm curious if the Jackets and Wings go East, who goes West? Pittsburgh? Buffalo? Toronto? Or is someone else heading West via purchase/relocation?

Pens aren't going West just so Cbus & Det can come East. It makes zero sense....

I doubt any of those 3 would go to the west.

I like the current format, I hate the AHL format for the playoffs, and the Oilers killing us years ago has sullied the idea for me.

I hope they do not go to this format. I do not like the idea of uneven divisions. Plus it seems to make little sense from a geography perspective. The four division idea looks like this...

and 6 divisions...

6 just makes more sense, at least until the NHL decides to go to 32 teams.

I love how everyone is content to screw the Red Wings over. Why don't you dudes spend 15 years in a conference where most of the teams are 2 or 3 time zones away and tell me how we should stop complaining about 10 pm start times.

There is just no way for DET to move to the east. It simply does not make sense. From both geography where Columbus or Nashville make more sense, to business perspective where Detroit is one of only a few marquee teams in the West that have strong followings everywhere, not to mention leaving CHI as the only original 6 team in the West.

Here's alternatives I have mapped out, and I'll throw one more in to try to get DET east(these are based on the 4 division format that this thread is about)

Some don't make any sense, but for are interesting and I'm bored.

14 West Teams, 16 East

Using rumoured names of Pacific, South, Mid-West and East

Trying to Get Detroit East with two 15 team conferences

An all-Canadian division

And a true South division

Geography has nothing to do with anything, we're about to throw Columbus in a division with teams in Florida.

Who is? What? Detroit is a West team and will be until Seattle, Kansas City and Phoenix have NHL teams with owners. Just get used to it.
