I have the same question. I've ditched cable but didn't realize I wouldn't get Rangers games on Gamecenter Live. Any recommendations for a bar in the 20s or around Union Square for Rangers games?

Tarrytown itself has nice downtown area.
You're not far from Nyack (just across the River)
There's a great restaurant called Harvest in Hastings on Hudson — also not far from Tarrytown.

Do the Rangers sell out every home game? Of late the atmosphere in their building has been up there with some of the Canadian teams IMO, always seems full and loud.

They used to up until last season. They jacked up ticket prices and some seats have gone unsold in the lower bowl because of it. IIRC, 8 games weren't sold out last year (mainly early season weekday games against western conference teams or less appealing teams) and the game against San Jose the other night wasn't sold out either.
Even though they aren't sold out, it's still near capacity (I'd say it would be around 17,500 with capacity being 18,200). Once the season moves beyond November and December though, every game will be sold out.
My buddies and I are planning a trip from ottawa (we are driving) in february to see the sens/isles game. Where would you recommend us to stay? We'd like a place where we can use public transportation to get us to nassau coliseum and Time Square to visit the city as we will be staying a couple of nights. Somewhere that's fairly easy to get to with a car and not too expensive!

Don't know any hotels but the Mausoleum is a ***** to get to. You can take the LIRR but would have to take a taxi eventually.

Try hotels in Queens. It's much cheaper to stay in Queens than in Manhattan, and public transportation is decent.

I would try renting a car. Public transportation to the isles stadium is a huge pain in the ass.

To get there via car from Ottawa? Yes. Then, you can take the subway to wherever you need to go in the city. It's also easy to drive to Nassau Colliseum from Queens (better than taking public transportation there). If you want to get to city quickly (anywhere from 10-30 minutes away), look for hotels near a 7 or N train stop. Both trains go to Times Square/Manhattan.
You're crazy. For the insane amount of people use it, I'd say they do an amazing job.

Over 6 million people a day rely on it to get everywhere. It may not be perfect (and it's a hell of a lot better than it was 30 years ago), but NYC wouldn't exist without it.
Plus, it's the only subway system in the world that runs 24/7.

If you plan on seeing NYC stay in Manhattan. If you have a car the drive out to see the Islanders is best. Staying in Queens might be cheaper but if you are on vacation Hotels in Manhattan have specials during the Winter. If you are only going for the game then stay in Nassau as there are several good hotels nearby

Tough to compare the two fairly given the massive differentials in size and population of their respective metropolitan areas.
This is the first time I ever saw someone say constant construction is a bad thing.
That's what bothers me about the city in whole. It's constantly needing fixing. The sidewalks in Forest Hills & Kew Gardens are falling apart, and almost killed my Grandma

It's much easier for other cities to do maintainance--every subway system in the world EXCEPT New York, closes down for the night. Not to menition that most of the subway system was built before 1920--again, most systems are not that old. Plus, this country is going through difficult economic times and does not value public transportation, so money is very tight and many people who actually work to keep the system running and clean have been laid off.
Like I said before, you think it's bad now, you should have seen it back in the early 1980s. In those days subway cars broke down on average every 6,000 miles they ran (now it's around 90,000 miles--it's amazing how important routine maintainance is) and there were derailments almost every week. It was impossible to get anywhere without delays.
Not trying to get political, but it's pretty absurd to expect the transportation in this city to be efficient or well-maintained when the organization that operates it is, or at the very least is strongly suspected of being, as overwhelmingly corrupt as the MTA is.
