Flames/Kings in preliminary discussions for Ryan Smyth
As an Oiler fan, I have no problem with the Flamers getting Smyth. The Oil can sign him next season and not give up anything for him. Although I am still betting that it would have to be for a Kotalik or Hagman, and that would be stupid of LA.
It seems like a Flames tradition to pick up ex-Oilers, or chase players Edmonton is after at the same time. Most of the time, Oiler fans are just like 'meh' and sometimes we even laugh.
For myself, I don't have any emotional ties to Smyth now like I did when he was in Edmonton, so if the Flames traded for him and we called LA's bluff a few things would cross my mind:
1) LMAO @ Calgary. Trading for an over-35 with a large cap hit on an already failing and old core would probably be par for the course. Cherry on top would be that Calgary would most likely trade a draft pick for him, thus further cementing their reputation and embodying the definition of "bare cupboards".
2) After a good laugh, I'd think, "What the ******* was Smyth thinking? Do you honestly still have an axe to grind?" because he ultimately has the final say due to his NTC (Add another to CGY too). I would probably shake my head and finally believe Smyth wants a retirement contract to pull a paycheque the rest of his career.
I just don't see this happening. But it is Calgary, and they do irrationally love ex-Oilers. Stupidity is not out of their front office yet.

Aside from Staios which is stupid in itself, what other players are you talking about?

Curtis Glencross, Ryan Stone and Ales Kotalik to name a few who were signed short time after their stint with Edm. I haven't included those players who are a few seasons removed.
There's also the love affair Calgary has with Edmonton-born players. And their team always pops up when Edmonton is pursuing/presumed to pursue another player (Bouwmeester, Souray and now Smyth)

Edmonton is only 3 hours away...it's close enough for players to consider Calgary to be home.
Also, who wasn't trying to get Bouwmeester and Souray at the time?

Yeah yeah, enough rhetoric. Selective memory and revisionist history is the domain of Canuck fans. There were probably 27-28 other teams NOT looking to sign either. That's not the point though. The point is Calgary seems to do it just to spite Edmonton and always ends up worse off because of it. The trick is to call Calgary's bluff every time, then have a good laugh.
i agree you flames can have him, and im pretty sure that will be the attitude of lowe and tambo as well, they're not going to get into a bidding war for a guy who priced himself out of town in the first place...

Calgary was worse off for signing Glencross? Please explain that one. Edmonton is still *****ing about GLencross being a Flame.
Trading a guy to the biggest rival of the team he requested a trade to...... Awesome!
Well he wants to be closer to home and maybe Edmonton wasn't going to pony up. Although I can't see the Flames coughing up much either. Maybe it's just a bargaining ploy by the Kings.
