It's been a while since the Oilers have actually completed a big trade. It would be nice to get this thing done, especially considering it's pretty much a zero downside move (Smyth for a pick).
Concerning the Calgary Flames, they can have Smyth if they want, I don't care, I hope Peckham knocks him out.
TSN said Brent Burns might be in play. Would be nice to see the Oilers in on that.
Edit: When I say big trade I'm talking about players coming back to Edmonton that have some prestige to them. Not the Penner deal, for example.

If Smyth goes to Calgary let the boo birds begin at Rexall.

Sounds like the Oilers are hoping to send some salary back to the Kings, and LA is telling them no chance.

Spector doesn't seem to think that there's much to the Smyth/Calgary talk but he doesn't doubt that Lombardi has talked to the Flames.

Probably just thinking this is the best (only) chance to try and dump Souray on somebody.

Brownlee: 31st for Smyth?

He also says Regehr won't decide on waiving his NTC tonight, so any Smyth to Calgary deal won't happen until tomorrow I guess.

He's terrible. I remember when it came out that the Oilers were taking Hall, he was on Gregor's show and said:
"What about this? Draft Hall 1st, then immediately trade him to Boston for the 2nd overall and [some prospect]."
Great idea champ. Piss off Hall, piss off Seguin, and piss off the fanbase.

As long as Edmonton is in play Spector says that he can't see Smyth waiving to go to Calgary and apparently Tambellini IS interested in bringing Ryan Smyth back.

Calgary really only has legs if a) Smyth actually really needs to be in Alberta for some personal reasons, and b) the Oilers don't want him.

It's just pure insanity that Calgary is even bidding against the Oilers here. How petty can that franchise get?

This team definitely needs Ryan Smyth. Not so much in terms of points etc, but leadership, knowledge, experience, work ethics, the list goes on.

Smyth doesn't have a no-trade clause, it disappeared when he was traded to Los Angeles.
Yes, I know Capgeek says that he has one, but Capgeek also thinks that Whitney has one and Whitney said himself in an interview that it disappeared when he was traded to Anaheim.

Well ever since he lost his inside source and good fishing buddy Pendergast. He has not a clue what the Oil are up 2 anymore.

Hm, everybody seems pretty adamant about Smyth having to waive to approve a trade.

Not all clauses are created equally.

Of course, the dopey fans of edmonton would do just that. Pure immature lunacy that just hurts the org.

By the sounds of it, LA chose to keep the NMC on the contract when they got Smyth.
Teams have the option to keep or remove the NMC/NTC on the contract after a trade.
Seems odd since almost every team removes the clause after a trade.
