It's called cap space and it's called we are getting lapped by other teams. We do not have many awesome contracts, in fact several of our contracts have minimal value. Look at the other two top west teams, the teams that are going to challenge us in the playoffs next season and have eliminated us in quick manner the past 2 years:
Van - burrows (2), kesler (5), sedin (6), other sedin (6), hamhuis (4.5)
Chi - toews, keith, sharp, seabrook
Sure we have a lot of fair contracts, but great contracts are what separates cup winners from cup losers (or WCF losers in our case).
We also don't have the kind of financial backing Van and Chicago have to approve those long term deal which bring down the cap hit.

Vancouver did not win the cup, Boston did, and they don't have any super deal contracts like that.

I'd argue that chara was a great deal considering we were offering 8mil for him. Ference, Boychuck.. savard was a good deal before he got concussed to death. krejci too. they have a lot of good contracts imo.

Savard is a terrible deal, it's a long term albatross that will haunt them for years, thats why those contracts are a BAD idea, and DW is smart enough to not use them. Plus he wasn't part of the cup team.
We were offering Chara 7m is all I ever heard, which is what he's worth.
My point stands, Boston did not have any contracts with any significant discounts.
Still don't like that they drafted him over Kopitar and he still drives me mad with his inconsistencies but I'm growing fond of Gooch and hopefully he can focus on his game and silence his league-wide haters.
A mil a year ain't a hometown discount, I'd call it fair market price. I'm worried about his progress, but I see more potential than concern in the long run
No, he really didnt. If anything, he should have had more goals. I've never ever seen a player generate as many breakaways as Grabner did, for most of the second half of the season he was getting 2 breakaways a game.
Glad to see Seto resigned, wish it was for a bit less money, but oh well.
And that's great but teams will start keying in on what Grabner's tendencies are and where he gets the bulk of his goals from and they will prevent them. He's not scoring 34 goals next year. Generally, when a player breaks out, it's because nobody expects him to and when no one expects them to, they generally don't focus on him especially during the season.
It will be known by all of his opposition when he's on the ice and to have one of your d-men watching him. He's not going to get the abnormal amount of breakaway opportunities next year and his goal scoring total will drop. Bank on it.
Well, I'm happy with 3. I think he could have gotten more from an offer sheet, and by doing this early we don't have to worry about those. Plus, 3 for 3 years could easily become a nice little deal by the end of it. Does this take him to his UFA status?

Yes.

We didn't get a single UFA year which annoyed me about the 3 for 3. DW better be offing our entire roster in 2014 for mass picks and prospects. I will go bonkers if we end up like dallas w/ richards and get nothing out of anyone.

Defenses might key in on him more, but grabner didn't sneak up on anyone, his breakaways came because he is quite literally one of the fastest skaters in the nhl. Luckily Van traded him away, or a Kesler/Grabner line would have been ultra deadly.

Yeah, DW seems to want to take the classy road and just let them go, instead of signing them for one extra year and getting some picks for them. But then again, he is probably making the life of the 2014 GM replacing him a living hell.

I disagree. Nobody really knew about Grabner until this year. How could they? He played one season last year in Vancouver. They knew he was fast but they didn't experience it until last year and this year. Nobody in the East even knew about him from playing in Vancouver.
He may be one of the fastest skaters in the league but he's not so fast that he's indefensible. A lot of those breakaways were due to poor positioning by opposing blue liners and not being really aware of his presence on the ice. That will be different next year.

I personally think that DW has a master plan that he's not telling Management so he ensures he still has a job in 2014.
(Sorry for the double post) but we have two great contracts in Pavs and Clowie.
Speaking of Clowe, this board was outraged when he got his "expensive" contract but it turned out to be a steal when he broke out. Personally I'm hoping for the same out of the Gooch.
Clowe, Vlasic, Demers, and Murray are the only players whose contracts expire before the end of the current era. Two of them will have to go, it seems. So really, the objective is to win the Cup before 2013-14, not the year later.
I like the signing mostly because in the article of seto's reaction he identified the inconsistency in his game and stated that he was gonna work on it. If he ends up breaking out this year or next, the contract is going to be a hell of a deal.

Inconsistency is one thing he needs to work on, but not the only. It's his defensive play and his work ethic every shift. Goalscorers are usually streaky, so consistency with respect to scoring goals is hard to come by. Seto needs to contribute in other ways when he's not putting it in the net. I've noticed he's not afraid to take the body. He can build on that as he's growing into himself a little and should feel a little more confident to do more

How's it going in Flyer-land, KM?
He has to right?? I'm pretty sure SVSE wouldn't be cool with a rebuild and missing the playoffs unless it's very short term. However, DW and the players mention the 3 year window so I'm sure he's talked to management about his plans afterwards because there's gotta be a reason he's letting all these important players expire in the same year. That's a big risk.
