I'm shocked that we did what we did. But it begs the question: if we are in a rebuild should we go all out and really start looking to competing 2-3 years out instead of next year? Right now Pronger, Timonen, Hartnell and Briere all have a little value but in three years time will be in decline. Do we unload these contracts now for youth?
I think the problem is that you can't trade Pronger because he is your best D and no one will readily take Timonen, Hartnell, or Breiere due to their contracts. You will only be able to unload them during the season to play-off bound teams when their contracts prorate and they will actually give up youth assets for vets. Plus with the moves being made it looks like they want to keep the HBL line together if they resign Leino. It would probably make more sense to move Carle, the Pronger-less whipping boy, in conjunction with someone like Versteeg to get something now since it seems like they could have more offseason value. Their contracts are a bit more manageable as well as their age. The rest will have to be moved if the Flyers aren't going to make the playoffs.
Also it doesn't seem like they want to go full rebuild mode after signing a goalie for 9 years unless they look to move him after a few seasons if they end up keeping Bob.
