  • The Blue Jackets' 3rd round (68th overall) pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft

Quote:
The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have acquired center Brayden Schenn, right wing Wayne Simmonds and a 2nd round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for center Michael Richards, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.

Schenn, 19 (8-22-1991), was selected by Los Angeles in the first round (5th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He completed a four-year career in the Western Hockey League this past season, where he posted a total of 116 goals and 199 assists for 315 points in 224 games, mostly with the Brandon Wheat Kings. Schenn has also appeared in nine games for Los Angeles over the past two seasons, recording two assists. He also appeared in seven games for the Kings’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs, in 2010-11, recording three goals and four assists for seven points.

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have acquired right wing Jakub Voracek from the Columbus Blue Jackets, along with a first-round (8th overall) and third-round (68th overall) selection in this week’s 2011 NHL Entry Draft, in exchange for C Jeff Carter, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.

Here’s the new cap breakdown on players the Flyers acquired:

• Jakub Voracek – restricted free agent. He had a $1.27 million cap hit this past season. He must be re-signed.
• Wayne Simmonds – restricted free agent. He had an $821,667 cap hit this past season. He must be re-signed.
• Brayden Schenn – his three-year entry deal has a $3.11 million cap starting this season.
• Ilya Bryzgalov – his new contract has a $5.66 million cap hit starting this season.

What the Flyers lost in cap counts:

• Mike Richards had a $5.75 million cap hit that now goes to Los Angeles.
• Jeff Carter had a $5.27 million cap hit that now goes to Columbus.

What’s the other upside?

Well, suddenly, it looks like the Flyers can afford to re-sign Ville Leino, who is seeking a multi-year deal worth more than $3 million a season.

Quote:
The man who scouted the Flyers’ two, young franchise faces – Mike Richards and Jeff Carter -- then signed them to what amounted to lifetime deals, had done the unthinkable.

Within a one hour span, Holmgren shocked the city of Philadelphia and the NHL on the eve of the league’s draft, by trading both.

“It was extremely tough,” Holmgren said, swallowing hard. “Those were two, hard phone calls to make…I think the world of both of them.”

Carter, the pure 40-goal scorer long rumored to be headed to Columbus, was dealt to the Blue Jackets for intriguing right wing Jakub Voracek, plus a second and third round pick in this year’s draft, which begins Friday.

Thirty minutes later, Richards, the heart and soul captain of the Flyers who once drew comparison to Bob Clarke, was sent to Los Angeles for diamond in the rough prospect Brayden Schenn, tough winger Wayne Simmonds and a second round pick in next year’s draft.

“Both Jeff and Mike have been good players in our organization for the last six years and they’re both good kids,” Holmgren said.

“They played very well for us…They were extremely upset. It’s a call…It was tough for me to make and tough for them to receive. You’re around this business long enough to know it’s a business.”

Not gonna lie, hate this. Of course I was pretty irate when Joni was sent packing as well. I'll get over it, hopefully our team does as well.

Is this really a good deal though? Jake seems to be a bit light and especially those picks in what is supposed to be a weak draft?

This is a trade we will regret.

Hell of a return at least.

Not necessarily. If they trade Carle and Versteeg they can open up even more space to sign some free agents.
