These two picks have a familiar ring to me. Picks likely to play in the NHL at the expense of big upside.

Certainly a safe pick. Burke certainly likes him, but don't think he was the BPA. Now no second round to grab guys who slipped either. Would have taken a handful of guys ahead of Percy there.

I wish we went with more risk.

I knew we were interested... solid hockey sense, and gonna be anchoring the major's blueline for the next 2 years. Was thinking we'd have to take a high upside forward here, but i'm sure burke is going to get richards/trade for a #1 center so we don't need it. Love that both picks are leafs fans! more likely to succeed!

Too much potential talent on the table, not a huge fan of this pick. Wonder if Burke tried to trade down.

I don't care that he's a defenceman. It wasn't position that mattered to me in this draft anyways. I did think the better players still on the board were forwards, but that's just how the draft unfolded.

What I don't get is why Burke didn't trade down. There couldn't have been a line-up going after Percy. Could probably have gone right out of the first round and still have been fine.

Percy reminds me kind of Keith. Hopefully he can surprise.

seems early

must have been convinced biggs would go before 25

cause otherwise they could have got percy at 30 and also picked at 39

Burke was on this from the Mem cup and the scouts well before that. He was one of the smartest guys on the ice during the Mem cup. He has very good skating and puck skills and is a cool as ice. I knew Burkie was after this kid.

Not sure I see the value in giving away the 39th. based on what was left on the board.

Anyway, let's hope the scouts have some steals since their next pick is in the 3rd. round.

you guys need to get over it, Burke and company spend hundreds of thousands on scouting throughout the year. Kid is a smooth skater, great with the puck, and has great vision.

Sure, he's a safe pick, but when we look back in five years and he's in the NHL and a guy like Rattie isn't (because of his skating) you'll all be thankful burke made this pick.

we have some of the best scouts in hockey, you guys need to trust what they are doing. There is far too much hype around these boards for flashy guys.

BPA, always, when drafting past the top 5.

Also, if you chose a safe pick with Biggs, why not go with someone who has high end potential? Take a safe, take a risk?

I guess his thinking is "well we don't pick now until the third round...so might as well get 2 safe guys"

Long term D-core?

Gardiner-Schenn
Blacker-Percy
Phaneuf-Aulie

Not bad for only having one American , I'm guessing Gardiner/Percy/Blacker/Phaneuf on the PP, and Aulie/Schenn/Phaneuf/Percy on the PK? The more I think about it, the more I'm liking this pick, just needed to get over the initial shock.

Kadri, Kulemin, Kessel, Biggs, Colborne, are just the few young core guys up front...seems like that's the main people thus far...man I hope we draft more forwards in this draft. (don't know if Grabo or MacA will be with us long term).

Considering he was most likely packaging the 25th with something else, he must have been after a top six forward. Judging my Burke's track record, we would have been happy with the return.

Why are you *****ing about my opinion on the pick, you most likely have a different one, I can handle that.

How can anyone not think that the Red Wings wanted Biggs?
AS SOON as Biggs got traded, Wings trade their first rounder for 2nd round picks.

IMO they probably know when you're picking late in the first round you're not getting that #1C, or that star winger or that #1D.

If Biggs turns into a Darren Helm would you guys not like this?

I'm pretty happy with a good forward and a pretty good D prospect.

He's a pretty safe pick.

Very smart player, rarely makes a mistake and has some potential to better offensively.

Ceiling may not be as high as some guys on the board but they probably feel he's going to keep getting better, and he's a good player all ready.

WHAT THE ****!

Rattie, Jensen, Jenner all on the board....what the ****
Considering Jensen didn't go until 29 and Rattie and Jenner didn't even go in the 1st round, I'd say Burke passing on them was all that ridiculous.

Like MacKenzie's reiterated numerous times, 15-50 can basically go in any order. It all comes down to personal preference and in Burke's mind, Percy was the best fit for the Leafs.

Percy's point total next season is gonna sky rocket, I think. He seems to have some real potential.
