Should PG do the following

Since we have to pay 3,8 for a D,

Since a D said he might take less to stay here

Should or could PG takes to one of his buddies who might owe him something, or someone who needs to reach the floor or might give someone an IOU to get rid of Spacek and offert the 3,8 for 1 or 2 years to Roman Hamrlik?

If i need to get stuck with a D at 3,8 millions i'd rather it be Roman

Markov
Subban
Gill
Gorges
Hamrlik
Yemelin
Weber

Diaz
Nash
Carle

i can live with this and by switching Hamrlik for Spacek, we still have space to go for another 5-6 on the FA Market for depth if necessary

I would offer Hamrlik $5,000,000.00 for two seasons with a cap hit and salary of $2,500,000.00 per season.

Take the rest of the money and land a Jagr, Leino and/or Laich.

Defense:

Markov - Gorges
Gill - Subban
Hamrlik - Yemelin
Spacek

No.
I personally hope Spacek is gone and Hammer doesn't resign.

This isn't an old folks home.

I think we should resign Wiz unless PGplans on signing a HUGE top 6 guy and won't have the space for Wiz.

Get rid of Spacek and not sign Hamrlik. Sign Wiz or one of the available UFA Dman.

not going to happen

1) i don't think this line up can fonction well with three offensive D-Man (Markov, Subban, Wiz) I'm pretty sure it's something Jacques Martin would not like

2) they will not put another 5+ on a D if you can have a good back up plan at 3 millions (being Hamrlik or other)

3) With Markov signed, Bieksa close to be in Van and the points he collected this season, Wiz knows he might be the top cookie available on FA Defenseman this season and he will go on the market to Kaching it

And who's going to play D for your young team?

you need a mix of veterans and youth

if you have Hamrlik and Gill for one more year, you give time to yemelin and weber to grow into the team, same for Diaz and Nash in Hamilton

so in 2012-2013 season your D might look like

Markov
Gorges
Subban
Yemelin
Weber
Diaz
Nash
Tinordi

i just think that the veteran presence of Hamrlik would be more useful to the Habs than Spacek

here's what i'm afraid of

Markov has not play really in 2 years
Gorges is coming back and we don't know what he's going to look like
Subban is second year
Yemelin is a rookie
Weber is young
Gill is Gill
Diaz or Nash Or Carle are non factor
And you want to throw in Wiz (who's not the type of D that acclimates well to a Jacques Martin system usually, that will cost an overpayment and which offensive styles will clash with already the presence of Markov and Subban)
Or you want to throw in a complete UFA (who will cost and overpayment, and will have to get into the Jacques Martin system)

It's putting a hell of pressure on your D but if you throw in a vet who knows the team and the system, who can give you, for sure 15-17 quality minutes per game, and is willing to take less to stay, i'm sure it's worth a look (specially if you substitute Spacek by Hamrlik for the same money, it still leaves you with cap space and you give your D some relief instead of adding questions mark....

Spacek is a very serviceable defenseman. If we could move him to sign Wisniewski, sure... but if we can't (which I doubt happens prior to July 1st, but hey...) I wouldn't be upset with having Spacek on the Canadiens' roster next season.

IMO there is nothing wrong in keeping Spacek and re-signing Hamrlik if that's the only option. It just appears the d-man UFA market is drying up a bit as UFA's (Brewer, Bieksa, Ehrhoff, Markov) seem to be rumored to be re-signing with their own teams.

I can't imagine Wiz won't test the market with the demand starting to exceed the supply even more and the cap going up. He could be in for a payday as could the Pitkanen's and others left. Hamrlik could even be overpaid again (not 5.5 but based on age and such) if he goes to free agency.

Having said all that and with Spacek and Hamrlik conceivably back on the roster it could make for a very competitive training camp. The only two d-men who to me would have their spots would be Subban and Markov but one is entering only his second year and the other is coming back after missing a good chunk of the last 2 1/2 years. I just don't think anyone would necessarily be guaranteed anything.

Agreed. It's time to MOVE ON. We need our 6th and 7th d to bring some toughness to the table.

This. Jaro gets treated like he is Komisarek or Redden or something. When he plays on his proper side especially, he is not an anchor on defence but a solid blueliner.

Sure he is getting older but he is a lot better than Carle, Nash, Weber(right now), and Diaz(probably). Some team would trade for him and I would only do it if it meant a big upgrade on the top 6 or to sign Wiz.

Spacek will stay. He is a very expensive 7th wheel, but an NHL team uses 7-10 Ds in a season. Might as well suck it up for one year.

If we land Jagr, Wiz, Laich, any of these players or maybe even Cole/Jokinen. I'll be pretty pleased.

If we land two of the above players I'll **** my pants.

It would require Space cadet back to Buffalo for future considerations, an e5

I do agree tho that if we can't sign Wiz Spacek would be a good #7 he's just had problems with injuries and stuff. When he's on his game he's usually decent.

Why people want Hammer or Spacek blows my mind.

Sure we lacked scoring up front, but age and lack of speed and versatility from the backend hurt the Habs too. Hammer isn't tough and strong enough to fill a role on this team at 3 million.

Habs are better off to deal for a Dman, or pay a couple million over the 3 million and get Pitkanen to play here.

The best case scenario will be to rid ourselves off Spacek and sign Wiz and Hamrlik. But that will most likely not occur. I see Spacek been kept and Hamrlik returning for one year (2.75M).

Markov - Gorges
Gill - Subban
Hamrlik - Yemelin
Spacek- Weber

Weber as 8th dman and also as an extra foward.

I'm just looking at worst case scenarios. Even at that ridiculous price, we're still at 6 mil under cap.
