Gotta make a new jersey but use the old Jets as the 3rd.

I'm torn. I don't like the idea of taking the records of a franchise and simply awarding them to another unrelated team, but I also see why they'd do it. It's not like the Phoenix fans have any real connection to guys like Dale Hawerchuck, Seleanne, or Phil Housley, but the fans in Winnipeg do. I guess I'd fall on the side of continuity and give the new Jets the history of the previous Jets just for the fans sake.

Love the fact that they seem to be going with Jets. Hope it's true. Shouldn't be anything else.

As far as the records go, the NHL owns them as they do with the 'Jets' name since they own the Coyotes. The Yotes have been in Phoenix long enough to keep just those parts of their history, so that should clear the way for them to give up the Jets half of it.

As far as the Thrashers history goes, I would think that it stands alone in the record books as a team that ceased to exist. That is to say that the Jets will take the old Jets stuff back and start adding to it with this upcoming season. The Yotes keep everything they've done in Phoenix, and the Thrashers history stays intact, but in limbo, like the Whalers history.

It also allows for Thomas Steen's #25 to stay retired in Winnipeg this way (and Bobby Hull's #9), and it frees those numbers up to go back into circulation in Phoenix.

Glad to hear

I have a feeling they are going to get a standing ovation with every arena they play at for the first time.

Upon hearing this news, Cheveldayoff did a great job in an interview with TSN yesterday, he was asked about the name, and he hinted around about maybe the Jets is part of the past, and the team kinda wants a fresh start. Good job by True North keeping the suspense, and thus the media attention the past several weeks. Bravo!

At least it's not the Winnipeg Airplanes or something cheesy.

But, glad to have them back.

That's what it should be right there. You nailed it. Jets deserve their history if they are reclaiming the name, and with the NHL owning Phoenix, it seems like an easy transition to make.

The only hurdle would be players on the Coyotes who played in Winnipeg; their statistics would technically have to exist for two franchises. It would make Tkachuk's career look more like journeyman's instead of basically a two team player. Shane Doan ceases to be a one-team player. On the plus side, Selanne's records would be freed from Phoenix, where he never played.

Good for them!

My guess is that this news came out today for the draft.

Great news and hope to see similar uni's.

All I need to see is Randy Carlyle, Laurie Boschman and Dale Hawerchuk lace them up and the universe will be back to normal.

Maybe at the draft tonight?
Gee that's the first time I've seen classy and Bettman used in the same sentence. As a matter of fact the only name Loserpeg should have even considered using was the Jets. Oh how I missed the days of looking at the schedule and chalking up 2 to 3 easy wins, those days are back!

I am pretty sure the owner's intentions were to go with something different (I was thinking Falcons after a Wpg hockey team who won the Olympics in the 20's or something like that - I have an old Canada jersey with the patch on the arm), but when the sale was announced the overwhelming public outcry was for the Jets to 'return'. No matter what it was, people would have been chanting Go Jets Go! for at least the first season.

Anyways, people here will be happy. There's a draft party at the arena tonight, with a pair of the much-coveted season tickets to be won. The Bruins are coming twice this season as Wpg is in the East, so I'll have to enjoy this year before the change!!

I'm excited the Jets are coming to Boston twice this season. The first game in Boston is the Saturday after Thanksgiving. If I have the money, I'll be there.
