if he goes to calgary its going to ruin a good day.
We traded him on the day the Oilers retired Messier's jersey. Having him become a Flame on draft day where the Oilers hold the first pick would be pretty much par for the course, I'd say.

It's looking like Calgary more than Edm right now. It's not like the old Battle of Alberta hate-filled days though where no Oiler would be caught dead in a Flames' jersey. Steve Staios wore the Flaming C, too.
So Oilers aren't willing to give up a late round pick? Or maybe they don't want him that bad. Or maybe lombardi is still kinda pissed that they tried to pawn of Souray on them and will take Flames pick instead even if Oilers offer same pick in same round.
The Oilers are certainly not afraid of PR nightmares and a tarnished organizational image so anything is possible.
If Calgary outbids us, I have no problem with that. And by outbid, I mean anything better then a 3rd round pick...if he goes to the Flames for a 5th I am done with defending Tambo.
Lets not kid ourselves. Chris Pronger would be welcomed back with open arms if he wanted to come back here. Hell, Mike Comrie was. Ryan Smyth, arguably the most popular Oiler of the past 15 years would certainly not be shunned for playing in Calgary.
The Oilers don't want him. I'll wait and see who (if anyone) Tambo brings in before a rage over this move. If he brings in some good players, it won't sting that bad. If we go into next season with the same roster, without Smyth, I'll be a bit perturbed. Especially if Smyth only cost a 5th.
I actually wouldn't be too upset if he landed in Calgary, if only because I don't think it's a good deal for the Flames. Bad for Flames = good for Oilers.
Its gotta be because of the insult Tamby gave Lombardi on offering Souray in return. Its gotta be the only reason, because if i was Lombardi I probably wouldnt return his phone calls either.

No ****ing way can you go into the season with the same roster.
If Smyth goes to Calgary for a 5th, it'd hurt, but I'd be ok with it as long as we sign some quality bottom six vets. EDIT TO ADD: If he goes for a 5th, and we keep the same roster, I'd be ticked.
Talbot and Fiddler type players at the minimum.

Lombardi also reportedly started by asking for Gagner and a 2nd or a third rounder for Smyth.
This is a business and that is how trade talks go. If Lombardi took that as this much of an insult, he shouldn't be a general manager.
It would be nice to see some loyalty for players who were warriors when they played for us. We've punted a lot of hard working players, Smyth, Moreau, Smith, Pisani, Reasoner, etc. Not that some of those moves weren't warranted, but it feels like there isn't a lot of that "Once and Oiler always an Oiler" mentality anymore. I think that's unfortunate.

Then Lombardi is a moron if he does that.
To take a lower pick, just because of hurt feelings, is a stupid move as a GM, if it comes out we were offering the same.
