We traded him on the day the Oilers retired Messier's jersey. Having him become a Flame on draft day where the Oilers hold the first pick would be pretty much par for the course, I'd say.

From Matheson's live chat (going on right now):

jim matheson:
It's looking like Calgary more than Edm right now. It's not like the old Battle of Alberta hate-filled days though where no Oiler would be caught dead in a Flames' jersey. Steve Staios wore the Flaming C, too.

Lets be honest. No he wouldn't. He wants to come back to Alberta. If the Oilers aren't willing to make it happen what choice does he have.

If he came back next summer he'd still be welcomed back with open arms.

Unless he gave the Oilers first dibs and Tambo sat on his hands...

The Oilers are certainly not afraid of PR nightmares and a tarnished organizational image so anything is possible.

If Calgary outbids us, I have no problem with that. And by outbid, I mean anything better then a 3rd round pick...if he goes to the Flames for a 5th I am done with defending Tambo.

You give Oil fans too much credit.

Tambellini has one more chance to make it happen I guess. 31 overall is too much, but i think 61 overall or less are ok.

Lets not kid ourselves. Chris Pronger would be welcomed back with open arms if he wanted to come back here. Hell, Mike Comrie was. Ryan Smyth, arguably the most popular Oiler of the past 15 years would certainly not be shunned for playing in Calgary.

Glad that Tambellini is passing on Smyth.

Calgary is just a bonus.. I love to see the fans cry.

Ridiculous...if he goes to Cgy for a late rounder, who's in for a riot?

The Oilers don't want him. I'll wait and see who (if anyone) Tambo brings in before a rage over this move. If he brings in some good players, it won't sting that bad. If we go into next season with the same roster, without Smyth, I'll be a bit perturbed. Especially if Smyth only cost a 5th.

I actually wouldn't be too upset if he landed in Calgary, if only because I don't think it's a good deal for the Flames. Bad for Flames = good for Oilers.

Its gotta be because of the insult Tamby gave Lombardi on offering Souray in return. Its gotta be the only reason, because if i was Lombardi I probably wouldnt return his phone calls either.

If we go into the season with the same roster, I'll get the pitchforks and cribs ready.

No ****ing way can you go into the season with the same roster.

If Smyth goes to Calgary for a 5th, it'd hurt, but I'd be ok with it as long as we sign some quality bottom six vets. EDIT TO ADD: If he goes for a 5th, and we keep the same roster, I'd be ticked.

Talbot and Fiddler type players at the minimum.

It will be a major failure if the Oilers don't come out of the summer with at least 2 useful veteran forwards and two veteran defencemen.

If they can accomplish that, I have no problem with them not pushing too hard for Smyth.

4.5M is a ton for a guy who might be the no.3 LW on the team (assuming Hall and Paajarvi progress).

Calgary is desperate to get back to the playoffs. Look at their UFA situation next summer. Yikes.

Lombardi also reportedly started by asking for Gagner and a 2nd or a third rounder for Smyth.

This is a business and that is how trade talks go. If Lombardi took that as this much of an insult, he shouldn't be a general manager.

It would be nice to see some loyalty for players who were warriors when they played for us. We've punted a lot of hard working players, Smyth, Moreau, Smith, Pisani, Reasoner, etc. Not that some of those moves weren't warranted, but it feels like there isn't a lot of that "Once and Oiler always an Oiler" mentality anymore. I think that's unfortunate.

Then Lombardi is a moron if he does that.

To take a lower pick, just because of hurt feelings, is a stupid move as a GM, if it comes out we were offering the same.

Man. I just don't think I could handle seeing Smytty in a Flames jersey.

Hell, my first ever email was dedicated to the guy.

Just wait until he "almost" trades up with #19 today.
