It's looking like Calgary more than Edm right now. It's not like the old Battle of Alberta hate-filled days though where no Oiler would be caught dead in a Flames' jersey. Steve Staios wore the Flaming C,
too.
Its gotta be because of the insult Tamby gave Lombardi on offering Souray in return. Its gotta be the only reason, because if i was Lombardi I probably wouldnt return his phone calls either.
Assuming that was the case...if I was Lombardi I would have been on the phone with Feaster before I had even hung up the phone with Tambo. Let him sit and listen to a respectful negotiation.
I mean at least have the decency to offer something that doesn't have a complete negative value.
Lets not kid ourselves. Chris Pronger would be welcomed back with open arms if he wanted to come back here. Hell, Mike Comrie was. Ryan Smyth, arguably the most popular Oiler of the past 15 years would certainly not be shunned for playing in Calgary.
Not convinced thats the case but some perspective in it as well.
Mike Comrie was "welcomed back" in some of the bleakest times ever for this org and when the team was simply horrible.
An analogy is a dying fan in the desert isn't going to say. I don't want that water, I want bottled water dammit..
Quite a few players have came from Calgary to Edmonton but the list is short of players who went from Edmonton to Calgary. I think it was Steve Smith who broke the seal then Fuhr and Staios. As far as notable players go anyways.
I'm gonna be really pissed if we end up losing out on Smyth over a fourth or fifth round pick. I'll be especially pissed if its to Calgary over a late round draft pick.

Really?
If Lombardi didn't negotiate with the Oilers over hurt feelings, then he's a moron. Especially knowing that we'd probably give a higher 4th or whatever to match the Flames.

Everyones blaming tambo but maybe daryl katz doesnt want to be beyond a cap floor team...
I think it's more likely that Tambellini simply doesn't have Smyth in his plans. We can argue all we want about whether he's right to do this, but the fact is that it's pretty clear he doesn't want Ryan Smyth.
The stupidest thing would be to boo Ryan Smyth. He wants to be an Oiler 1st. If management doesn't give up a 4th for him, how is that his fault? He said Edmonton is his 1st option and wants to be close to home. Can't blame Smyth if the Oilers say no.
at this stage in smyths career, i wouldn't be to upset with him going to the flames, it would be nice to bring him back though, he has some intangibles that i think would really help the oilers out.
look on the bright side though, we could be flyers fans. the trades they just made were the equivilant of us trading doug weight and ryan smyth in their prime on the same day.
Wow in addition to Gord Miller saying it. Ryan Rishaug is on Oilers Lunch.
He said the return that would be coming back to LA from Calgary. Would be a pick likely in the 4th to 6th round range.
If true this is inexcusable...if offering a prospect who will in all likelihood never see the NHL for a tangible asset is too strong for Tambos stomach then what does that say about his ability as a GM?
If I was Lombardi right after Tambo pitched Souray I would have countered with Gagner as well.
Deal with the initial absurdity by countering with another.
And do you know for a fact that trade talks between GMs discussing players who've asked to be traded and only given one team don't start with huge lowballing and overpayment offers before things get to something both teams can get behind?
I surely don't. Offering Souray was worth a shot when Calgary wasn't in the mix. If he insisted Souray be involved and we lose out because of that, put that on Tambo, but exploring options is a GMs job.
I'll be right on board with blaming Tambo if Smyth goes for a late round pick and thats the extent of it, but lets get realistic here and remember that these GMs are professionals and not whiny babies. (Unless their name is Mike Gillis)
