I must be on something else than just absinthe, because in my delusional illusion of reality wild traded Burnzie for a top notch prospect, Devin Setoguchi, and a 1 round pick wich turned out to be Zack Phillips!

I'm not gonna lie, SJ really gave a lot for Burns.

You know, Sharks need to sign him now. Pretty sure he will sign with them though.

I'm still really feeling Wiz.

I really liked what I saw from him once he was sent to the Habs.

He's only 27, and plays with quite a bit of poise. Plus, he could easily slot right into our PP that suddenly has a big hole on the back-end.

I don't see any of the other UFA's being able to do that, with the possible exception of Erhoff, if he actually gets to UFA.

Kaberle will be overpayed, Erhoff will be overpayed, Bieksa won't help our PP and I really see Pitkanen being a nasty July 2nd overpayment (i.e. "we didn't get our guy, so we have to get someone").

I've irrationally got my heart set on that now. Wiz or bust!

I think that Wiz is going to be expensive as well.

One major concern was whether he could translate his play from EJHL to NCAA, and he has done that nicely.

One major concern down!

yes. i don't want to feel that way, but like i said somewhere else earlier it's now clear that Fletcher has been given more than this year to produce. This was a very future-centric first round. Very solid. I don't like our chances next year with what our D looks like even if we pick up one of the better FAs, but after that with some of these guys starting to show up...

No. Burns is a top 20 defenseman when his head is on right. Seto is a 20+ goal scorer who might be able to do better, but might not. We move up from an early 2nd to a late 1st, and who knows about Coyle.

Burns was my second favorite player on the Wild so this one hurts a little bit, but after the initial shock wore off a bit and I really looked at it I realize this trade is 100% for the best.

Burns probably required too much money to stick around, so Fletch traded him to a team that really needed him, and we got something back from that team we really needed.

pair him with someone responsible.
Perfect.

You'll love to hate Seto, in the sense that he's incredibly streak so people hate on him when he's not producing, and then he'll have a stretch where he absolutely carries your team and no one gives him enough credit. Funny, lovable guy, great upside. He scored 15 goals 13 assists in the last 33 games of the season once he was put back with Thornton, and then 7 more goals in the playoffs. He and Koivu should be great together. He really came around the end of the season and I personally believe his contract will look like a steal this time next year.

Coyle will most likely play RW. He's a joy to watch, just wait for the WJC this year. He'll take 2-3 years until he gets to the NHL though.

I am super jealous that you got Zach Phillips, as he was the guy I desperately wanted but didn't think would fall to 28th OV. He's compared to Joe Pavelski, so there you go for that.

I think you guys got the better deal, but the Sharks do have that window.

Also, do you think that Burns would play well with Marc-Eduoard Vlasic? Vlasic is a decently mobile, not physical d-man who is amazing positionally and with his stick, blocking shots and PKing.

Does Burns play PK/Is he any good at it?

the thing about that is it's a classic case of not knowing how good someone is, because the level of competition is so low. we know now that Coyle is a great prospect, and he will be an NHL player. just look at his college numbers or pay attention to his work at the Team USA camps. he is always one of the best players on the ice.

Hard to judge a trade when we don't know what Burns' next contract will be, and whether or not our assets pan out.

I think its a fair trade, similar value to the Jeff Carter trade, and Carter as a FWD is about what I'd consider Burns as a d-man.

We got Gooch, Coyle, and Phillips for basically a rental. To me, this could be up there with turning Benny into Gui on the list of Fletcher's best trades.

Short term, Sharks win. Long term, Wild wins. Next season is still going to bring growing pains. But what we're seeing is something that the Wild have never seen before. It's called stocking the cupboards. Remember when you opened them and could hear echos? Remember when the only thing in them was a beat up puck, Gabby's old retainer, and Riser's retired 5-year plan? Teams can't rely only on signing FA's. They have to infuse prospects along the way, but even more so, have enough prospects (and/or NHLer's) that can be used should the perfect trade come along.

I don't expect every asset from this trade to pan out or make immediate results. But look at what it does for 2012 and beyond. We've got some emerging guys in Houston, the usual faces in St. Paul (now featuring "Gucci"), and add Coyle, Zucker, and Granlund in the mix down the road. Heck, if what Fletcher said is true, Lats could actually join the team this season in great shape for once in his life. And he's in a contract year. Remember what he was like when he first came here? We could get a new player without making a single move. It's still going to be a slow and painful process, but we're actually gathering tools to build the boat.

I'll miss Burns, and it will be difficult to replace him. He's a great player. But he's also been overly streaking for the past two years. So the Wild had three choices. Overpay him, hang onto him longer and pray he doesn't get injured before a trade, or move him NOW. They did the best thing. We got our butts handed to us by losing Gabby for nothing. That alone threw the team back considering the rewards it could have gotten for him.

We got 3 first round picks, along with our initial one today. Pretty dang good considering the way the Wild have dropped the ball in the past.

Yes. The problem is most people have the typical Minnesota Mentality where you don't trade anyone that is a fan favorite because it means you don't care about the fans or something. This solved two problems. Scoring and wtf we were going to do with 2-4 defensive prospects who are ready for NHL minutes.
