Would you have traded the 1st for Brouwer?

Minutes before the Habs picked, just before going to the commercial break, Pierre Gauthier and Stan Bowman were on the phone, as we've read by multiple sources including TSN. Just after they announced the selection of Beaulieu, Troy Brouwer went to Washington. This makes me think that Chicago was trying to get the Canadiens' pick for Brouwer.

Note that Brouwer is 25 years old RFA, a 6'3" 215 lbs winger who scored 20 goals a season on average the last couple of years. He has 4 fighting majors and 262 hits last year.

Would you have done it?

Nope. He once had 22 goals, playing on a stacked offensive team. He's not really worth a 1st IMO.

No reason being who fell to us at 17. Would not have made that trade with good reason.

Nope! Steep price for a top 9 forward who does not play a well-rounded game at all.

Once again, this is just another example of people overvaluing size more than anything else.

I like Brouwer but I wouldn't have done the deal for the 17th. Much rather have Beaulieu

He couldn't even produce while playing with guys like Toews and Kane, definitely wouldn't of given up the 17th pick for him.

No. There are plenty of players better than him on the FA market, like Laich. Not that I hate him, but he's not worth a mid-first pick. Maybe a 2nd round, but we didn't have any. He hasn't had amazing stats knowing who he played with in Chicago. I see in him no more than a 25-25 guy, if not a 3rd liner. Yeah he hits and scores, but Patches will do the same, and better. I even prefer AK to him.

Except you missed the fact that the Washington / Chicago trade was announced 45 minutes before the Montreal pick.

Well you're the same guy who wanted to ship the 1st and AK for Penner so yea... no. We'll keep the kid and maybe use him as a bargaining chip if he produces in the AHL.

TSN announced that it was agreed to way, way before they actually announced it at the draft. I think they said they would announce it before Washington's pick (which they did).

Nope. At best, Brouwer is a 2nd liner with a big body. At 17, you can hope to pick somebody more valuable than a 2nd liner. Brouwer would have addressed a need, but it's a very steep price to pay when you can just try to go for a guy like Laich later on.

I like Brouwer, but he's not worth a mid-First Round Pick.

He's worth, at most, a low First or a high 2nd. Those 10 spots or so really can make a difference in the first round, imo.

Yes 1 1.27%
No 78 98.73%

LOL, I don't think I've ever seen that. If anything, people use vote something they didn't want to by mistake. But not even in this case.

A better poll would have been, would you have traded a 2nd for 1 year of Liles ? I would have. Well, a 2nd in 2012 I guess, if we even have it still.

Brouwer would be a nice player to have...but not at that cost, not with the wingers on the UFA market. That deal would have looked even worse with Beaulieu slipping through the cracks. Beaulieu has the tools to be an all-star, Brouwer will never be more than a sure fire 3rd liner that can play 2nd line at times.

I voted no...Brouwer is not that good of a player. I jwould have drafted McNeill. Or may have traded down to acquire a 2nd round pick, then drafted with Biggs, Connor Murphy or Puempel. Something like that.
