I am sure he came back from the NHL to make the team. He almost made it last yr but never got called back up

I think he makes the team and he's next on my list of prospects for this poll

Leaf fans are already going on about how they have the best defense in the league.

Don't they say that every year?

According to the average poster on the main board, our defense is terrible and our roster is full of holes. At times like this I'm caught between being starved for hockey talk and being sick from the idiocy on the main forums.

One thing I'm realizing about MDZ-Erixon-Valentenko is all three are lefties. D'oh. If only one of them was a righty! Erixon or Valentenko would probably be better able to play on their off side if need be. It wouldn't be the first time two lefty D's played together. I recall some teams having 5 lefties and only 1 righty.

Why does every trade have to have a "winner/loser"?

I definitely think the Wild/Shark trade was a fairly even deal, and should help out both teams -- both players needed a change of scenery (Havlat wanted one -- he complained about his TOI. Can't blame him when his coach was Todd Richards.), and it fills a need for both teams. San Jose's system is more built on speed, and Havlat is a much faster skater than Heatley is -- and Heatley is the perfect linemate for Koivu. His effort tailed off in San Jose, but when he's on top of his game, his hockey sense allows him to get into the perfect position for a good shot -- although, the deterioration in his skating has hindered his ability to rove a bit.

Also, just look at their stats the past 3 season -- there isn't an astronomical difference between the two aside from the 2009-2010 season:

Havlat:

08-09: 77 points (Chicago)
09-10: 54 points (73 games)
10-11: 62 points

Heatley:

08-09: 72 points (Ottawa)
09-10: 82 points
10-11: 64 points

Obviously, there was a big gap in the '09-'10 season, but otherwise, Havlat has been roughly on par with Heatley, who has had his skating abilities deteriorate something fierce. San Jose needed the cap space, and Havlat needed the change. Good for both teams.

I agree with your point about Coyle but short term San Jose wins the Burns trade. The key now is getting him signed.

You're spot on about Heatley/Havlat

I think that Heatley's tragic car accident when he destroyed his knee might be attributing to his decline in skating ability. You can only go for so long on a surgically repaired knee, especially when you are going through the grind of 90-100 games a year like he has for the past couple of years.

If Heatley gets himself back up to scratch then the Wild can "win" that trade pretty well. He's a more dangerous scorer than Havlat, and in general more durable. But...hasn't worked out that well for him lately

What a crazy offseason, I'm not even sure how to start predicting the East at this point.

Heatly's best seasons were played on lines with Spezza/Alfreddson and Thorton/Marleau. I dont want to take anything away from the guy, he is a good player. But if Heatley and Havlat switched spots over their careers, and argument could easily be made that Havlat would have the better numbers over their career. Factoring in that Heatley is a headcase, I dont think its as lopsided as it looks. This might be one of those trades where everyone was like, "What was SJ thinking?" And then later people start calling them geniuses.

a lefty-righty split is nice but not the end of the world. the flyers had 6 lefties last year and i think like 2/3 of the dmen in the league are lefty so plenty of guys are lefty playing on the right side.

we'll find out in camp if its an issue for these guys but i'm not overly concerned at the moment.

Does that apply to Boston trading Joe Thornton?

When that trade went down, I think everyone agreed that Boston got hosed.

Ah, I thought you were alluding to Thornton having a great career (sans playoff misery) and Boston getting a bunch of scrubs back.

Heatly is too much of a pure sniper to be very valuable...

...fans always wants snipers. Then you get someone who can shoot the puck. In the complex game of today, you ought want more.

If anything the Thornton trade caused them to not be in position to win a cup sooner.

people only look for the guy to do more if he isn't scoring...if heatley or gaborik were scoring 40-50 goals like expected then no one cares about the other stuff. but when their production drops to 23-26 goals then people expect them to contribute in other ways to make up for them not scoring.

and for those bringing up heatley's car accident and the injury he suffered there...that is a non-issue at this point imo.

look at his stats each year since leaving atlanta...

50/53/103
50/55/105
41/41/82
39/33/72
39/43/82
26/38/64

so he had a drop off this year. but he's scored 39+ every year since the accident. he's been better since the accident statistically then he was before.

On the Leaf board they're trying to convince themselves that Connolly is as good as Richards.

These are the same *******s that fought us tooth and nail that they are a better team than us and Richards wouldn't be able to resist Burke's offer,

RT @NHLconnected: Ex-Isle Zenon Konopka has signed a one year deal with the Ottawa Senators worth $700,000.
