Wait .... so if the East gets two new teams ... that means DET and CLB would come back West.

.... why does the NHL make everything so damn complicated. They've created a system that will essentially last one or two seasons.

Because despite all this speculation there's no guarantee they actually will expand. You can't make Winnipeg and Dallas continue to be in the wrong divisions based on sometime in the future we may add/move a team or two.

Go back a page. I said, and still believe, the smart thing was just tweaking the current format.

This should still be 2 conferences with 3 divisions each. This odd number stuff doesn't make sense, and you knew the players didn't like it. The move to 4 conferences now is unnecessary.

The 2nd Toronto team would make so much money, it is hard to imagine the NHL allowing those teams to block it. Expansion fee would be huge, and then the new team would make a mint in revenue. Plus, since Rodgers and Bell own the Leafs together, there is speculation that one will retain the Leafs and the other will get the new team so they don't have to share.

Odd numbers in each division ( 8 + 7 / 8 + 7) are fine as long as they don't base the playoff seeding on them. Once they get to 32 that's when they should implement divisional playoffs.

If it does happen and we play our cards right, we should be able to keep both, as Campbell could likely still be considered a prospect (I forget the expansion draft rules from last time) and we'd only have to protect Lehtonen.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_NHL_Expansion_Draft

If we're having an expansion draft in the next year, we'll be okay, but I would expect Campbell to be backing up Kari in two years and playing 25-30 games a season.

Apparently in that draft all 1st and 2nd year pros were exempt (not mentioned in the wiki article). There should be no problem keeping Lehtonen and Campbell if need be.

The one problem is that it massively dilutes the talent pool for the expansion teams. I can see them revisiting that rule as a result.

Update...

@RealKyper

Hearing #NHL #NHLPA will soon announce an agreement in principle on realignment. Players appear comfortable enough moving forward.

Part of the deal is to renegotiable alignment when/if relocation and expansion occur ... so we get to do this all over again in a few years ... probably sooner because of PHX.

Wasn't there already a deal in place to relook at alignment in 3 years anyways? (regardless of expansion/relocation)

The only deal I saw was in regard to expansion/relocation. Why would they change the format if the nothing changes with the current 30 teams?

I swear I saw it had a built in three year revisit rule. Can't find the quote now (of course).

The NHL is involved so I don't doubt you. It just sounds really stupid. Having to make changes because of relocation/expansion is one thing .... otherwise just make a damn decision and stick with it.

Congrats to NHL West teams. With the NHLPA saying yes to realignment, you will have a 7% better chance of making playoffs than East teams.

I'm glad there won't be as many 9:00/9:30 PM games, but I'm going to miss playing SJ and ANA so much. LA is fun too, but it's not as heated as the other two ... PHX is just mehhh. Not the team .. not trashing them personally, but those games lack emotion overall .. compared to the rest of the Pacific.

This is great news, plus it gives the Eastern teams the chance to really develop those unfounded persecution complexes.

I say boo hoo about the 8 vs 7 thing, that is the price for keeping the Atlantic division teams together. NJ was able to bus to its playoff games until the SCF.

I never heard anyone B about the National League having an extra team (until this season). It's about time. I've worked all day and my team doesn't even start playing a divisional game tonight for 3 and a half more hours.

As an East coast fan, I'm more happy about the "each team in each barn every year" thing. Guarantees me 3 Stars games a year.
