There was speculation a few weeks ago that he might ask Smyth to retire.
That speculation would be complete bs. He is going to ask a player who was fourth in team scoring and came of a good playoff performance? I cant believe how anxious people are to believe any bull swit they hear.
I don't think it has - yet, but it won't be long before the broader hockey community starts taking sides, and not too many will be in Tambellini's corner. Especially those who were made to look rather silly when things didn't come together as they had predicted.
I actually think this. I think DL wanted to unload Smyth. I think Smyth would have shut his mouth and honoured his contract, that is what he seemed to say.
I really think this is all DL.
By the sound of it, Lombardi wanted to have cap space to make a run in free agency, so, perhaps, there is something to it.
Imagine the Kings ink B. Richards, who is 4 years younger than Smyth and can play C or LW. They would be absolutely loaded.
Could be Dobber being late to the party. He's a fantasy guy, not a beat writer. I don't know why he would have a secret scoop. On his site he was analyzing the trade as if it occured. On second thought I think he's not a reliable source for this.

And this was supposed to be a feel-good story!
well if you consider the reason given in the media from the kings side for the deal falling apart was Brule's health, yet both the Oiler's and Brule's people have said he's good to go.
I think a few people might be questioning Lombardi as well. It's a complete disaster both ways, just less people in LA care about it than they do in Edmonton.
Just get this trade over with. When Smyth left the Oilers lost all their heart. Last year was the first time since he left that the team played with any emotion, thanks in large part to the rookies. Getting Smyth back will be added insurance in case of any sophomore slumps next year and hopefully he can teach the kids some stuff also. We have the cap space, just give them a pick and absorb his ca hit for 1 season, it's not like we're anywhere near the cap ceiling.
Like I said, Tambellini is one of the rare GMs who can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
LOL. Ahh man... I don't know what to think anymore. I feel bad for Tambellini, but I can understand why people are frustrated with him. I'm not a fan of Lombardi and I really believe he's playing the media side of things to the hilt. Tambo, love him or hate him, just isn't that kind of guy.
And there's Brule--who was thought well enough of to go 6th overall in his draft year--struggling mentally to come to terms with why he hasn't been able to live up to his drafting position. And now furthermore reading that he wasn't good enough to be a salary dump.
I probably wouldn't make a very good GM as stuff like that bothers me. Though I'd love Smyth to come back, I'd love it even more if Brule found his confidence in his abilities again.
If this is true, then all we're waiting for is some paperwork to be filed and it's a done deal. The Oilers & Brule's camp are saying that he's healthy, so it should be over soon.

I read last night that Brule cannot be bought out because of his concussion status or something... and that was the deal breaker.
every year edmonton is the center of some trade fiasco...its getting old
You know why it seems that way right? Because you're an Oilers fan and you follow everything regarding the team very closely.
So my guess on this deal, it falling apart anyways, falls on Lombardi
The deal was agreed to, but the teams wanted to wait, in that time Lombardi started to have the buyers remorse, added conditions, changed his mind and we are where we are.
That all said, something will still get done, imo.
