stoked for Munzie, and though I'm sorry he didn't get to do this with 'OB like he would have wanted, I'm glad he's getting his shot. He's certainly earned it!!
Bottom line, as good a guy as Kielback is, I'm really glad they didn't go with him, just to re-live past glories. It's a new generation, time to move forward with a new voice.
Munz and Beyak are good, solid guys, but IMO Keilback is in a league of his own. I'm not saying that out of a sense of nostalgia, I just think he is clearly better than the two who were picked.
Something must be up with Keilback, though. It is weird that a play by play man as good as he is would be out of hockey (MJHL games don't count) for so long while far less impressive talents occupy NHL broadcast booths. I mean, what else could it be?
I didn't like Munz on the Moose broadcasts. Found him boring, but I'm sure some of that was that I just wasn't a hardcore Moose fan. NOw that he's doing play by play for a team I'm obsessed with, I'm sure I'll grow to love his calls.
Munz did well and could be better if supported by a top notch crew, which I am sure he will have. It is easier to do PBP when you have a colour guy and separate intermission crew.
Munz is average at best. Paul Edmonds calls a good baseball game, I think if he can make baseball exciting he would have been real good for the jets. Oh well OB for pre and post game shows.
Munz is a (yawn) horrible choice but I will watch most games on TV so it could be worse.
Dennis Beyak for TV is a good choice IMHO. He is a Manitoba native, the (soon to be former) voice of the Leafs and he actually makes hockey sound exciting. Not as good and the legendary Curt Keilback but not a bad second choice. Dennis is waaaay better than ANYONE currently on sportsnet and has a good hockey I.Q. Here's a snipit of his play by play call:
I think we should be greatful we didn't get someone like Rod Black. Nothing against the guy but he is what I call a "utility broadcaster". His sports range is good as he can pretty much braodcast any sport but in doing so he's knowledge for each sport he covers suffer. We want someone that knows the game inside and out and can also deliver a good play by play. In a perfect world that would be Curt but I don't mind Beyak.

Give me a break, Munz peaked with AHL hockey and he was just average with that, this guy is just not NHL calibre.
Wish they would go with Moore, Kamal or John Bartlett (the voice of the AHL Toronto Marlies) who is a couple of notches above Munz!
I cant' believe 1290 hired this guy away from their rival CJOB. I wonder if True North pressured 1290 to hire Munz out of lingering loyalty. TNSE breaking the relationship with their long time broadcaster surely rased some eyebrows so maybe this is their way of avoiding severing all ties with them.

Disagree. Jets are going to hire who they think is best and not just do favors or something. Also, hiring someone from CJOB (ie stealing them) isn't really a friendly gesture towards CJOB.
Beyak is good. I was hoping he'd get the Oilers radio gig when it was available last summer.

Noone in their right mind can say Munz is the best man available. As for "stealing him" from CJOB, I really don't see it that way because it's not like the moose are still playing. I'm pretty sure Munz wouldnt get the job if he were not the former voice of the moose. I don't think it's unreasonable to believe TNSE would hire him in large part due to his former ties and recognition he had with them and the moose. This sort of thing is not uncommon and happens allot in the workplace.
If you ran a poll on whos's the best I'm pretty sure Munz wouldnt come close to topping the list. Curt is a gem and it makes no sense why they would prefer Munz over Curt. And like a previous poster mentioned, this is not nostalgia talking. Curt is miles ahead anyone else in pure abilty alone. I'm not living in past. The man is GOOD.
will we ever free ourselves from the shackles of the damn moose.
LOL ... No Kidding.
I wondered when something would really disappoint me it's all been going too good until now. I did not like Munz at all for the 5 minutes I lasted listening and few times here and there I over heard him I was not impressed. I will have to listen to some games on the radio so I hope it improves.

Meh, not gonna get too worked up about it, probably only listen to it on the radio when driving. I'll either watch on the tube or at the arena.
Just remember the "damn moose" are the reason the NHL is back, if the Chipman's didn't get involved with hockey we wouldn't have an owner or a new building.

Bingo.
Besides, the whining over Munz is a bit much. He's pretty good and if it couldn't be Keilback then it might as well be him. I'm curious as to why someone as good as Keilback is not employed by a NHL radio rightsholder though? What's the backstory there?
Don't know why there is a lot of hate for the Moose either. As someone already pointed out, they paved the way for the NHL.
I don't know if it's hate for the Moose, but noticing all the Moose hires you just start to wonder if maybe the loyalty blinders are stopping us at looking at better options. I've got faith in True North, but I can understand how some might question the moves. From Zinger, to signing ex-Moose, and now Munz.

OK, sure maintaining ties with Munz - okay. I read it to mean maintaining ties with CJOB originally. Oilers had 300 or something applicants for their radio job, assume Jets had the same. Jets are going to hire whomever they think is BEST fit, not do favors or homecooking. If they don't, then you guys are in trouble with future decisions.

Rod Black is the worst sports broadcaster in the business. It's painful watching Bomber games when he is on.
I would actually be embarrassed if he was the PBP man for the Jets.

Well - not exactly. If you look at Chipman & Co's hire, it's clear they like to hire people they have a working relationship with. They don't have to be precisely former Moose employees (or else they wouldn't have hired Chevy), but that kind of working relationship is important to them.
And to be fair, it's not that unusual in the business world.
