I hope he gets 3.5-4 or more million. He is definitely going to be overpaid. Sounds like a Devils move, trying to recapture former glory. I don't think he's really going to help them as much as they might think.

Fraser isn't even a parking cone, considering those can be moved around. He's more like a lamp post.

I like Salmela as a 6th defenceman. Not sure how our D lines up after White, Volchenkov and Tallinder but Sal is a decent 2 way defender and actually started laying out some pretty big hits in the second half of the season. I kept confusing him for Volchenkov cause I didnt realise he hit like that.

At this point, I don't see a problem holding onto a guy like Fraser, let him show up to training camp and fight for a job. And the very least, another team will run into injury problems and come looking for a team with a defenseman or two to spare. Fraser might not be the most talented player out there, and the chances of him sticking next year aren't very good, but he can still be an asset. It's obvious with the depth of depth defensemen the team has now, combined w/ some of our top prospects means that a lot of these guys will be AHL bound or with another organization. But for now, I don't have a problem holding on to them.

That wouldn't bother me, but I'm confused about why they didn't qualify him. Wasn't he one of the pieces they got in return for Klesla? If Lepisto walks, that's poor asset management.

I'd be ok with picking him up as a reclamation project, like Mottau.

Exactly. Throwing a college kid straight into the NHL is not a good idea. He should have been brought along slowly in the minors, and that's what the Devils probably would have done.

Trading Klesla's contract for a player that was even reomtely valuable is good asset management.

Stunting Klesla's development and then overpaying him anyway was bad asset management to begin with.

Columbus is really brilliant with the 1st round picks.
Klesla, Leclaire, Picard, Voracek, Brassard, Brule, Filatov...
I'd fire the scouts immediatly...

I see you Gilroy and raise you a Fayne. They do have different styles so that could have played a part in Gilroy's devlopment. I wouldnt mind taking a flyer on him but he will not sign here. Mainly because he would be so low on our depth chart behind Volch, Tally, White, Larrson, Fayne, Tao, Urbom Burlon, Noreau, Corrente, and Salmela if he is back, plus Salvador if he makes a return.

Good lord thats a lot of D depth battling it out for 2 or 3 spots hope they all are aware what its going to take to make it. Not to mention and guys like Sova coming out of no where

Part of that problem is coaching which is why i simply cannot understand how anyone wants Hitchcock as coach.

no. He's a *******. He can play... but he's too much of a tool so it outweighs that. Same w/ Avery.

A guy like Burrows is a tool, but he can play. Clarkson can agitate, but he's not a vagina like the above mentioned gentleman.

Wasn't Fraser supposed to be kicked out with certainty because he was demanding such gigantic things in the negotiations last year? You don't mess with Lou, and such?

Some of it is the scouts, who are picking flashy players with poor work ethics, mental midget prima donnas, and players who are simply not good enough to justify being taken that high.

Klesla was rushed, Leclaire and Picard were taken too high, Voracek and Brassard still can become impact players, Brule is a mental midget, and Filatov has an outrageous sense of entitlement and no work ethic.

But development plays a big part in it too. A good development system can make your scouts look smart, a bad one makes them look like idiots picking so many high profile busts. Columbus rushes too many immature players and project picks into the NHL too quickly, because their team needs the immediate help.

Fayne started in the AHL out of college, was a mid-season injury call up who played out of necessity, and then pleasantly surprised, stuck in the big league, and earned a spot on the middle pairing with his play. Gilroy was given a big contract out of college as an undrafted UFA, was granted a spot on the team out of training camp, and some of the Rangers commentators seriously went so far as to say he is a future Hall of Famer. And then the Rangers wondered why he couldn't live up to expectations.

See the difference?

Yes, and now that he's qualified, Lou has chained him to the furnace in the corner preventing him from going somewhere else on his own during prime time UFA signings. He will show to camp and not make it past the first cuts and then be on the street looking for a place to play and all the holes will be already filled. Off you go to play in Leksands IF...

Don't mess with the Godfather.

Maybe a naive question, but does Fraser have player-elected arbitration rights again this year?

if Jared is right, Lou qualified Fraser but sees him more as an asset than a roster player. If Lou thinks a draft pick may turn into a better player than Fraser, might as well trade him away at some point and acquire the pick instead of lose him for nothing.

Not sure,

His qualifying offer was $550,000 I'm sure (required 10% increase on his salary last year) and he doesn't qualify for a 1-way contract mandate because he hasn't played in 150 NHL games nor 60 NHL games last season.

Since he invoked arbitration last year I would guess he can't do it again this year. Where's Classic at - he knows this stuff.
