They kept giving Ryder one year deals because he was a lazy slob but Gorges is the example of dedication, don't do that with him, it's a slap in the face. He should be regarded as our core group that we want to maintain for years, they need to reward him with something meaty.

Chill people. As many have mentioned, this is little more than book-keeping. A formality to retain his rights. He'll get a multi-year deal for a lot more money shortly.
Gill Doesn't even make that much. Gorges is reliable, I'll give you that, he's a freaking workhorse and takes many for the team. But I can't see why Gorges would get a higher amount then Gill (who has way more experience) on an RFA contract. If he were an offensive D ala PK, maybe. But he's a great shutdown D.

July 1st... From what I understand, they already gave them an offer and the players have until July 1st to accept. If they reject, they go on market.

yup. the way they can go to another team is if they are traded obviously or another team offers them an offer sheet and if they choose to sign it the habs then can choose whether or not to accept compensation which are draft picks depending on the amount of the deal or match the deal. offer sheets dont happen often. i highly doubt gorges gets an offer sheet. i like gorges but he really isnt all that great.

If they reject the QO then they negotiate a contract as normal, which is why this is typcially a normal book-keeping operation. The purpose of QO's is to make a young player's previous contract his floor in terms of compensation, although some take less to get a one-way contract. Arbitration is more for if there is an impasse in negotiations.

Gorges hasn't been dissed at all. Qualifying him is a formality. It doesn't mean they're not going to offer him a long term deal. If they don't, then there's good reason to complain. For the moment, it's a no brainer that PG deals with his pending UFAs before they hit the open market, along with the simple resignings like AK and Gill where they basically just extended the existing contracts a year. Gorges will be signed to a multi-year deal at a big raise after July 1, IMO. The questions are how much for how long, but unless he's asking for the moon I don't see a problem. The team has money and Gorges small frame and limited offense should keep his price to something reasonable. Agree with you it would be ridiculous to sign him to a one year and start him on the path to leaving as a UFA.
