Agents for Andrew Alberts, Tanner Glass and Rick Rypien have had NO contact with the Canucks with free agency 3 days away.

So what now for Christian Ehrhoff?

With Kevin Bieksa returning to the Canucks' fold, agreeing Monday to a $23 million, five-year deal, contract talks continue between Vancouver and the Ehrhoff camp. The German defender can become an unrestricted free agent Friday.

A source told ESPN.com there has been an offer and counteroffer between the Canucks and veteran agent Rick Curran.

The general ballpark for Ehrhoff is somewhere between Bieksa's new deal and the one signed by Dan Hamhuis last July 1 (six years, $4.5 million per season). But don't look for Ehrhoff to take less than either player.

Does it get done before Friday? It might. Then again, the Detroit Red Wings are sitting there with money to spend and a need for a top-four defenseman ...

The agent for pending UFA blueliner Christian Ehrhoff, Rick Curran, told ESPN.com Monday he has had a conversation with the Vancouver Canucks since the Cup finals ended and the two sides plan on meeting in Minnesota this week to continue that conversation. Maybe it's just me, but with the Detroit Red Wings openly flaunting their intention to be aggressive July 1 on the blue-line front, I'd be keeping all my options open if I were Ehrhoff, even though he does love playing in Vancouver.

My guess is that the first piece of Canuck related news we will get is Kevin Bieksa re-signing with the team. That or the qualifying of our RFAs.

Wait, there's a team called Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg? That is the greatest name ever.

I'm guessing owner of the team was a big fan of the TV show?:

Wouldn't surprise me if there was a team with the name "David Hasselhoff".

I did a double take when I saw that myself.

And I can't say I disagree with skywarp's feelings re: Ehrhoff...

Detroit can have Ehrhoff and we'll take Pitkanen for 5.25. Done deal.

I want back:

Torres - $1M
Higgens - $1.6
Salo (with a pay cut, bonuses on games played) say $2.5M
Bieska ... on a $4.75 M 4- 5 years deal
Alberts (if he stays as a cheap back up) $900K
Lapierre $1.2
Hansen $1.8M

With Hansen getting the only pay raise in the bunch.

We have Tanev fighting for a spot next year.

I also think that the Canucks should see who comes calling. We have a real shot at the cup again next year, and there should be players coming calling willing to take a pay cut for what they are worth. I would love to go to the trade deadline with $3 - 4 M in the bank ....

I think Erhoff is worth close to $5M, but the Canucks have enough depth with

Bieska, Rome, Tanev, Ballard, Hamhuis, Alberts, Salo and Edler. Only keep Erhoff if he signs for $3.75-4M.

That gets us up around $59 ... though some of that money needs to be in MB, in guys who can't be waivered ...

Not sure what happens with Ballard and his $4.2 ... when Tanev, Rome and Alberts were being slotted in ahead of him ... maybe that just gets parked in the minors.

Speaking of which, if you send someone to the minors like Ballard, and the Canucks trade him, does he have to go through recall waivers with his new team???

I sort of hope not. I just think it's time for a fresh start for him--he's had two massive leaves of absence and while he's a good scrapper, he doesn't bring much else to the table.

I just dont' want anyone else to have him I know he doesn't really have a role here any more, but it's Rick Rypien! It just wouldn't be right seeing him on another team.

I love the guy too, and he's a hell of a fighter and an entertaining one at that. But as a hockey player, I don't think he brings enough to the table.

What about Andrew Brunette? Too slow? That guy is always a pain in the butt when we play him.

Hansen definitely deserves a raise, 1.75mil per over 3 years sounds nice.

You answered your own question, he would be to slow to play on a line with Kesler and Samuelsson/Raymond. I think Erik Cole would be the best fit in terms of UFA's.

Apparently Gillis has no interest. Also Cole hasn't proven he can play without Staal.

I may be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure that every bonus counts against the cap until it is unobtainable (ie a bonus of Salo if he plays in 82 games would come off the cap as soon as he misses a game).. isn't there no CBA next year? Thus the NHL can't be sure the salary cap will allow for deferred bonus cushions?

Kesler brings the speed. what he needs is smart hockey players to play with.... meaning get Raymond the black hole of offense the hell away from Kes.

If Erik Cole stayed healthy I think he'd be an awesome guy to have, seems to play with a ton of heart and is the powerfoward type guy who could fit into the Torres role. Like Torres has had some big seasons in the past and is streaky.

The other thread mentioned Hannan, he has family in Vancouver but I'm unsure he'd sign here. He'd be great to have as that 3rd pairing defensive stalwart though.

I wonder, if Erhoff walks and we're unable to sign that smooth-skating puckmover, do we try Tanev? I realize he's still a rookie...

They're in the NHL video games. DEL (german league) has some great team names/uni's.

Do we fancy Fleischmann? According to Kuzma the Avs are not planning to re-sign him. Still on medication but will be 100%. 21 points in 22 games with the fellow Avs.

Personally I think Erik Cole will stay in Carolina...he's successful there and he has a good relationship with Rutherford.

Fleischmann I wouldn't touch. Soft as butter and has a serious health condition. Not what we're looking for.

I am of the mind that Ehrhoff pretty much has to be signed. Yes there is a price limit to what the Canucks should spend on him...but he would not be easily replaceable.

His place on the PP would need to be filled and I don't see any possible way that is adequately done from within. If he is not here next season I expect our PP to drop...perhaps even out of the top 5/6. And since PP success is so important to this team, not keeping Ehrhoff means EV production needs to be improved upon even more than if he was kept (as EV play needs to be improved even with keeping Ehrhoff).

Banking on UFA's to fill that big of a hole that would be left by Ehrhoff is stupid. The only name that may be able to do it is Pitkanen. Now, there are three words that are always associated with this player: shy, introverted and a head case. Now head case could just be a negative misnomer that follows from the first two words...however, the fact that he is really shy and pretty introverted are well documented.

So with all that said, why exactly would he sign in the fish bowl that is the Vancouver market? Banking on replacing a player who already knows and fits in well to the Canucks system with a shy player who is good (so others will be after him) is not a good plan.

Now I realize that Ehrhoff may simply price himself out of Vancouver and plan B will have to be looked at. But thats exactly it: re-signing Ehrhoff should be plan A and anything else should be Plan B. (Note: this is just regarding Ehrhoff...as Bieksa is a very important re-sign as well...it's just that people seem to accept that but are completely willing to walk from Ehrhoff and look else where)
