4.5 Mill/yr for 6 years is a bit expensive.

Yea, I thought he'd get that or near that as a free agent, but not a resigning.

There isn't really a difference at this point. If anything the fear of free agency induces overpayment.

$4.5 is just what I thought. He's Hartnell (4.2) without the dumb penalties, and he wins face-offs.

4.5 is pretty much the going rate for 2nd liners now and I think Laich would have got more on the open market given the pathetically thin group of forwards this year.

True, but $4.5 is probably around the most he would have gotten through free agency. The Caps must have been desperate to keep him.

Yeah, seems like a fair contract for a pivotal role on a winning team.

A few think he could've gotten even more....
Laich wanted to stay in Washington; likely took less than what he would've received on the open market.

That's a good point, with so few alternatives he probably could have gotten more than the $4.5m I thought he would get. The Caps decided they needed to keep him, and keep themselves from getting into a bidding war.

Washington can keep him. I'd rather sign Cole anyways.

I'm not surprised.

Great deal for the caps. The guy is so under-rated for what he brings to that team. Bit gutted that he stayed in our conference

32 y/o guys with sever injury histories are definitely better options.

Well, if we were thinking 4-4.5, why wouldn't Washington keep him for that? I was convinced he was leaving Washington though, they're going to be up against it.
Looks like we turn our attention to depth role players. Tim Connolly is an interesting name, but someone has to be a defensive center who can play 16-18 minutes against top lines.

I'm glad to see someone else is skeptical on Cole. I wouldn't be against him, but people seem to be putting their eggs in the basket of a guy who is more likely than not to start breaking down quickly. 2yr/$5M or I walk away.

If Laich's contract is the going rate, then people should stop complaining about Hartnell's contract.
Cole just seems like he doesn't know how to play outside of Carolina.

While I think people complain about Hartnell way too much, Laich brings a bit more to the table.

After Dupuis re-signed today:
RT @emptynetters: With 17 goals, Dupuis would have been the 10th-leading goal scorer on the UFA market. That's how lean things will be Friday.

I'm not really on the Cole bandwagon, especially if its for $3.5m or around there. I wonder if this made Leino's price go up? That's one less top forward in a a pretty weak FA class.

Laich may have a bit more versatility, but Hartnell has produced more.
I don't see their values that far off from each other.

Centers are just a lot more valuable positionally.

I though Laich was primarily a LW who played C when needed?

What the effin hell?
I'm a huge Laich's fan, but I would never pay him that much.
