If you are future building than a 31yr old forward is not the way to go

They are clearing room to get an offer sheet ready for Stamkos. It is a win win for Philly. Either they get Stamkos or they handcuff the lightning more. My money is on this come Friday, unless Tampa signs him before.

they need to clear more then just not bringing back Carcillo, trading Powe and waiving Leighton,Walker and Backlund. Hartnell at the very least would have to go.
Voracek and Simmons are probably going to officially sign today at the presser.
We are not going to offer Stamkos an offersheet.
Sign a 3rd line PK center, a 4th line winger and a 7th defenseman who will be cheaper then Walker. Thats about all we are going to do IMO

The rumor flopping about is that he's pretty sold on NYR.

Why in the hell would you sign a guy who will be commanding 6.5+ million per for a long term, who is a playmaker first, and who is already in his 30's? Not only would this go against all the recent moves towards youth that Homer has made, but it also makes zero sense in terms of the roster and cap space. This team needs two or three more veteran roster players (a defensive minded center like Madden and two gritty forwards who are capable of putting the puck in the net, like Cole) not one Richards and several Phantoms.

Is signing a 31 year old playmaker to a long term large cap hit any more a risk than signing a 31 year old goalie to a long term large cap hit?

Signing arguably the best regular season goalie from the past two seasons is a little bit different than signing an overrated playmaker who is one hit away from having scrambled brains. It's quite amusing seeing people criticize the signing of Bryzgalov. It's the very same people who would now be criticizing Philadelphia had they not signed a #1 goalie and kept going with the bandaid solution (Bouchers and Leightons of the NHL) Haters will be haters, no matter what the team does.

Not only was Bryzgalov the best goalie available, he is, as mentioned, arguably the best goalie in the NHL the past two seasons. You need to pay premium for goalies. The term is long but front loaded, and since he was signed pre-35, then you can bury him in the last couple years of his contract or buy him out. Would gladly repost this if I am wrong in April 2012. Will the naysayers do the same when he is nominated for the Vezina next year?

When the playmaker has a history of concussions, yes.

Actually yes...how many skaters above, let's say, the age of 37 actually have a good impact on their team?

Now do the same for goalies and you'll see the % is much greater.

I really hope not. Over-rated, and going to be extremly expensive.

Agreed, let's hope they are just in the game to up the auction price for the NYR. Let TB sign Stamkos for big price too.

Then have cap room to scoop up a couple parts to round out the squad.
