You know I thought of this as well. But he's never been there. Heck chimera got time. Brooks has played more D then RW. Where's the demonstrated versatility in this instance.

Malone is my comparable as well. And he's not a comparable player IMHO. As a 3rd C he compares to staal. Once again not comparable.

What I fear is we are setting ourselves to be winger centric continuously. Laich works great with semin. But what does that mean for D or c if those two top 11M?

We're very fortunate the goalies are cheap. And Carlson is cheap for now.

I'm very confused about identity and gmgm's vision of this team going forward. I hope to be enlightened.
I think once the trades start happening things will be a lot more clear.

I can envision Tampa Bay Goalie Mike Smith upon hearing of the news that Laich will be remaining in the same conference doing his best impression of Michael Scott's No God NO.

I don't think Semin will be around long-term. The best thing to happen to McPhee may have been Semin and his agent not wanting to commit long-term, although I guess McPhee's genuine interest is somewhat unknown since we don't really know how good his offers were.

Plenty of quotes from Laich & GMGM in Vogel's piece.

Agreed. I like Brooks, but am curious to see what the team does from here on out. I think they overpaid. Hate to be a numbers guy but he's a 20-25 goal scorer and didn't hit that, and was one of the many guys who were close to invisible in the postseason.

That being said there's other guys I'd dump before him so we'll see.

So after this deal, Caps' wingers:

Ovechkin - $9.5M cap hit
Knuble - $2M
Laich - $4.5M
Semin - $6.7M
Chimera - $1.875M
Fehr - $2.2M
Brouwer - $2.5M-$3M (presumably)

And the centers:

Backstrom - $6.7M
Johansson - $0.9M
Beagle - $0.512M

Yeah, there's gotta be wingers moved for a center.

Thanks. Driving.

Then if semin's gone my worry gets more serious ala haus. How is he going to perform with less talent. Can kuz perform equally? Tons of questions. Less answers now IMHO.

Ironically, that trait of versatility in Laich that the Caps value so much and employ so liberally – as well as the young core and competitive team in place in Washington – were factors in sealing the deal in the center’s mind.
Quote:
One other factor in Laich’s favor was his natural position: center. There is a dearth of quality pivots in the league right now, and having strength up the middle is of vital importance to a contending club. With Nicklas Backstrom, Marcus Johansson and Laich manning the middle, Washington is in good shape.

“That position is a little thin around the league right now,” says McPhee. “It may be why there was more emphasis on drafting centers this year and certainly more of an emphasis on trying to find centers when you’re making trades or in free agency. They’re a big part of the spinal column of your team.”
Just sayin.

It may be a tad high but Brooks Laich is what this teams needs and more of it to be honest and with this signing and the Brouwer trade it appears GMGM is starting to realize that!

I am glad he is staying but I am really surprised at what he got. I think GMGM just overpaid again. I am not surprised by the term, but a 4.5 cap hit?

Oh well, I am glad he is staying though.

Can we start the Fehr trade watch now?

How long has center been a weakness under McPhee? I'll believe a move when I see one.

Hell, defense was another decade long weakness and he didn't make a move to bring in a good dman from outside the organization until after it stopped being a pressing need VIA carlzner.

Noticed that as well, though they did speak to his versatility generally.

I liked what Chimera-Laich-Fehr brought in limited action last season, particularly against Chicago late in the season. That's not a stellar playoff trio from a hockey IQ standpoint but they're under contract and under the circumstances it may be the way to go. I'm not sure those two wingers or Semin fit all that well when it comes to what this team wants to be.

I was hoping for a $4.25, he would have been sought after.

Laich wouldn't help them win a Cup as a 4th liner. He is nothing special at all. <facepalm> The skipper is drunk at the helm.

Go Bolts!

Laich deal front-loaded with $6.5 million next season then $4 M each of following 2 yrs; $4.5 M in 2014-15; and $4 M each of last 2 yrs
4.5 is too much (think I said 4 in the 15 Q thread)IMO & the 6 years is probably 2 too many.

I have no interest in seeing Eric Fehr get traded. Given the opportunity, he can be valuable, just look at his performance at the Winter Classic. The problem is that BB apparently is not a big fan of his.

The trade watch should be as follows:
1. Semin
2. Schultz

Everyone else on the team I'm content with, that includes Chimera for another year and Poti if he can return healthy.

I think people are forgetting how much center Laich played down the stretch last season. Sure, for most of his tenure in Washington over the years he has been at second-line wing, but they've been intoxicated by the thought of him at center for a while now, and gave it a healthy amount of time late last season.

The real question is how readily Johansson continues to mature. If he's everything they want out of him, then Laich can play wing and Joahnsson permanently slots in at #2 center. If Johansson has any kind of sophomore slump, I think Laich immediately slots in there. Strungout's series of quotes is right on the mark. The Caps' GM and the Caps' PR folks talk about Laich as a center these days. It could be that they are transitioning him into that role.

It's not so much that the Capitals are going to put him at center, simply because of the money they're paying him. It is more that the money they are now paying him probably precludes their bringing in a center from outside the organization in free agency, and the rest of the (promising) centers are still raw. That leaves Laich, barring rapid development from the team's more precocious centers.
