Hopefully Van ignores requests in the west... jeez..
and in reply to Iron's lines..
.
"Rick Nash ($7.800m) / Jeff Carter ($5.272m) / Antoine Vermette ($3.750m)
R.J. Umberger ($3.750m) / Derick Brassard ($3.200m) / Kristian Huselius ($4.750m)
Matt Calvert ($0.891m) / Samuel Pahlsson ($2.650m) / Jared Boll ($0.725m)
Derek MacKenzie ($0.600m) / Derek Dorsett ($0.562m) / Patrick Eaves ($1.250m)
/ / Maxim Mayorov ($0.862m)
"
WTF kinda third and fourth lines are those???
I agree with Nash - Carter - Vermette and Juice - Brass - RJU (however I can see Calvert playing in RJU's spot to roll three effective scoring lines, but in this case).... (and) I see us making a third scoring line which is NOT what you proposed... and Dors at center? really? IF RJU is in the top six I GUARANTEE we have a L4/3S line SOMETHING like Calvert/Johansen/MacKenzie with a checking line of Mayorov/Pahlsson/(Dorsett or Boll)
I didn't suggest you were saying we shouldn't try to get Ehrhoff, etc. But let's not kid ourselves, failing a free agency splash, trades aren't a safe bet with the landscape as it is.
Fail in free agency and the job becomes much more difficult.
Do you think it's fair to reply to "all the trades are gone" with "we don't even know what trades might be out there"?

Suddenly my enthusiasm is waning. I went from excited to blah in the span of about 4 hours. I don't like how Friday is shaping up now. Our options are limited and everyone knows that the Red Wings are after a defenseman which won't bode well for the Jackets. Hopefully Howson has a rabbit in his hat because I've got a feeling we're all in for a world of disappointment.

I didn't necessarily focus on lines themselves other than people on the roster and the money they would be paid. Of course lines change all the time so that becomes a moot point. However, looking at it again makes me realize I forgot Johansen in the lineup so that throws everything off anyway.
Maybe we can get Streit from the Islanders after Ehrhoff signs.....
We may be saying welcome to Columbus Jonathan Ericsson and Ian White. Or Anton Babchuck..... or..... crap we're getting thin on options for UFA's.
I will say one thing, in all seriousness, I know we need to upgrade the defense (i've been preaching it for 3 years now) but I hate having to do it through free agency. Over pay, under perform....tends to be the norm. I'm really hoping for a trade or two.
Geez...just thought about it....Yanick Weber welcome to Columbus ???? (Actually I liked him as a replacement for Russell but not in addition to Russell)
I was thinking the same thing. Or we can all say, "Welcome back Stralman! We missed you so much we wanted you back again so soon!!!"
I believe that Ehrhoff will sign with the Isles. However, in the case of Dan Hamhuis last offseason -- Pens traded a third for his rights prior to UFA and he didn't sign there. Isle reportedly offered the most money and he didn't sign there.
thank you matthew...guess ppl have locked down accounts and that's why nothing is showing for me? sorry, used to be so much more tech savy
oh well...back on topic...we're looking at Wiz, a bunch of 3/4 guys, or finding a trade partner (c'mon JayBo, me hoping got us Carter, I can try again right?)
I would (and have) suggest that in the event a major acquisition is not available or beyond our means, that GMSH will look to improve the blue line with moderate advances rather than a block buster superstar #1. Probably an older Dman with a moderate (shorter) contract to bridge to the arrival of the Springfield gang.
The assets spent in the Carter trade were probably the tickets that would have other wise been used for a first liner D. I do not regret the trade, but we had only what we had and the opportunity to get Carter was too good to pass up. It takes awhile to grow and/or acquire the assets for those kinds of trades without creating more holes. It may however mean the huge redo of the blue line is set back some.
That's not to say that a big push will not be made to sign a FA and it still can happen but there are alternatives.
I really feel like we're going to go HARD after Wis, Ehrhoff, Kaberle... and possibly Ericsson or White or Babchuk
There's one UQ RFA who'd been asked about before. I guess the odds of getting him depend on whether or not it was a UQ to avoid arbitration, or a UQ for some other reason.
