Although this is a failed 06 pick for 06 pick, Carle has played a few games in the NHL while being a decent AHLer, where Mitera has had issue sticking in the AHL with being stuck down in the ECHL for a while. Seems like a trade up for the Crunch?
MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier announced on Friday the acquisition of Mark Mitera from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Mathieu Carle.
Mitera racked up six goals and 22 points in 71 games with the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch last season. Anaheim’s first round, 19th overall selection at the 2006 NHL Entry Draft spent time with the Iowa Chops, San Antonio Rampage and Abbotsford Heat before joining the Crunch in 2010-11. The 6-foot-3, 213-pound blue-liner also spent four years at the University of Michigan from 2005-06 to 2008-09 before beginning his pro career.
Carle, selected 53rd overall by the Canadiens in 2006, has played 222 games with the Hamilton Bulldogs, picking up 97 points in that span. The 23-year-old defenseman also suited up for three games with the Canadiens in 2009-10, finishing with a plus-1 differential to go with his four penalty minutes.
Giroux was a gamble by Clarke at the time but not really considered a 1st rounder because of his size.
I think he was ranked around 38th in the draft and would not have been on Burke's B.C.->Bigfoot->"Character" radar.
To think we could of had Giroux or Kulemin at 19 instead
Much more anoying was Burke picking Logan MacMillan when David Perron was the player our Scouting Staff was high on. Burke taking his safe players was just boring. Everything after round two is more or less done by the scouts. The first maybe the second round is the GM's responsibiltiy.
Overall we can be pleased that Burke took Bobby. And honestly I think we got a gem in Justin Schultz who will open some eyes in two years from now. Overall Brian Burke was the right GM push the team from a contender to a cup favourite. And IMO I like the loyalty he shows handling his players. Everything else he is doing tremendously ******.
Mitera, a player I liked back then unfortunately never developed. Thinking back, as much as I can remember there have not been many players who stood out. Mitera was the safe pic there.
The thing I still don't understand is why do you pic a safe player at pic 10-15+. Take the risky road. Otherwise Getzlaf, Perry would not be here. Schultz was risky Holland as well. Those borderline players have much more impact when they turn it around as long as the downside is hockey sense or something in the character side. Somehow Burke hits the homerun with players lacking hockey sense.
MacMillan was described as a physical hard skating forward lacking hockey sense. Gardiner as a world class skater lacking hockey sense. Even Mike Eaves underlines Gardiners downside (well, regarding to his ability in the offensive zone)
Anyway. Mitera was a fine prospect and maybe he can turn it around somehow. It's good for him to get a fresh start. Carle seems to be a fine addition and getting a right shot player back was certainly a topic for Bob. Finally I like the move!
