Its probably more about the increased chance he signs in the west then it is the 7th round pick ..

Good move for Columbus. I liked Wiz in Montreal (was much better than anyone gave him credit for when we got him) but it was clear that with Markov/Subban/Weber on the blueline and Wiz rightfully looking for a big payday, it just wasn't going to work. Glad we got anything back for him.

I would prefer Hamrlik over Spacek though.

Aaron Portzline of The Columbus Dispatch tweets that he thinks that CBJ has an 80-20 chance of signing Wisnewski.

Aportzline Aaron Portzline
RT @CBJ66: @Aportzline odds of signing? / I'd say 80-20. He seems excited according to @joshrimerhockey, and Howson doesn't waste picks.

They got rid of him because the team was going nowhere and Wiz was due to be UFA. They traded a conditional 3rd to get him, and received a 2nd and a conditional 5th for him from montreal. No idea if the conditionals were met, but that's pretty good asset management.

Anaheim traded him because they didn't want to pay him his arbitration award.

Do you understand supply and demand? You are only able to trade for something that others are willing to give up an asset for.

NYI was willing to give up a 4th for Ehrhoff, Columbus was willing to give up this for Wiz. So that is how it went down.

Has nothing to do with the quality of a player.

As a Hawks fan, I hope Columbus signs him because

1 - He will get overpaid.
2 - Wiz has some nice offensive pizzaz, but he is absolutely horrid defensively. Not sure I have ever seen anyone so far out of position as much as him. Will be nice to play against him 6 times per year.
3 - I know my GM is looking for another defenseman, and I don't want this guy on my team.

Well.. idc about this, knew that we wouldn't be able to sign Wiz and CLB too.. he's asking for too much and can't play D.

not sure why he would sign when he's so close to FA.

Even though CBJ has to improve their defence, am I the only one that is worried about their goaltending. I know a bad defence will make a goaltender look bad but Mason has been pretty brutal the past 2 seasons.

That would be a good argument if he was traded at the deadline but he was traded two months before the deadline. Islanders could have easily held onto him and probably gotten more at the deadline and would have had a better idea if he would resign.

This

I don't really understand this "trading for rights to negotiate" business. What if the player has no interest? Then you gave up a pick for nothing. Yeah maybe its just a 7th but still, how often does this "exclusivity" turn into a deal? If I was the player I'd be like "great, heard your offer, now I'll wait til July 1st, thank you very much"

People has to understand that a 7th round pick is like inviting a non-drafted prospect to your training camp, its like nothing...on the other hand a 5th round pick is something interesting, i wouldve hoped that the deal is for a 5th round pick and not a conditionnel 5th round pick.
That's a pretty naive view. Want to play with the team and agreeing to terms are two completely different things. Stamkos most likely wants to play with the Bolts but hasn't signed a contract still after 363 days..

Off the top of my head, Bouwmeester, Timonen, Hartnell

I see your point, but in this case, there's this that I posted a few minutes ago:

Finally a great move by Howson! 22m for 4 years? 5.5 average cap hit doesn't seem bad.

Maybe he just has that great attitude where he'll gladly play anywhere they want him and believe in him

Anyone can be frustrating to watch...even Ovechkin. Good on Columbus, I hope a deal gets done so he plays in the west. Blue Jackets are looking like a good team so far

I didn't find him frustrating to watch at all.

MAB was frustrating to watch, not Wiz.

I know, he's not frustration to watch, he's a beast offensively but sometimes has troubles in his own end.
