Thank you Marchant for all the great memories, enjoy retirement!

Kariya is one of the reasons I am a Ducks fan. Selanne and him put this team on the map. I am not happy with the way he left, but I will not deny his importance in the Ducks franchise along with some great seasons. Good for him for putting his personal health ahead of hockey. I am grateful Kariya played for this team.

Very sad to see Kariya retire. Still one of my favorite players. Too bad he can't re-sign with the Ducks and then retire. Damn you Gary Suter and Scott Stevens.

So, do we retire his jersey or not?

I think yes. He left in a less than favorable manner, but without him putting butts in the seats during the first few seasons it is likely that we might not have a team today.

O' captain my captain.

He sure has the career numbers of being worthy... However, he's only going to get booed. It's probably a better idea to wait another ten years or so if it's going to happen.

No. He simply didn't accomplish enough while he was here to warrant it (Jiggy was the sole reason we went on the run we did in '03). Add in the fact he back stabbed the fans and it's a no brainer.

Cheers for the memories Todd, absolute warrior. Great to see him stay in the organisation.

PK retirement? Good.

Obviously not immediately. Giggy (and Teemu) go first. Eventually he is going to get it retired though. I can see everyone booing him at first, then cheering. A kind of payback/appreciation thing.

Yeah pretty much agree with this.

If they tried to retire it I'm pretty sure I'd come over and riot...Vancouver style

Not to mention, he really only had 3.5 truly great seasons. His last few years in Anaheim were a mixed bag.

Bobby Ryan wearing the number already answers your question.

Have fun surfing during your retirement days captain Kariya . Isn't Paul interested in coaching?

I think Neidermayer would have a better shot at having his number retired than Kariya.

The bad news for Kariya is that the organization gave number 9 to Bobby Ryan. Teams don't usually give out a potential retired number to another player. For example, when Toskala asked for number 35.

iLau is right!

If the Ducks organization had any intentions to eventually retire Kariya's number they would have told Bobby to pick a different number.

Kariya's jersey will not be retired.

Agreed. If PK was able to come back for a season I might think a lil differently but considering how long ago it was and that Ryan is wearing #9 I doubt it will happen.

Just saying.......

In other news....

Or how about you let those of us that were here and emotionally invested in the team feel hurt when our captain left us?

I'm totally fine with that. He left 8 years ago so feel free to ***** to your heart's content 8 years ago. As of now, it's childish, petty, and tiresome to have to wade through several pages of "how player X ruined my childhood" posts when the guy has health issues and is being forced to retire. Especially when it happens EVERY time his name enters a thread. The point of my post was - be a bigger person. If that's too much to ask, well.....

If someone wants to reserve the right to ***** about a player on a message board for all eternity that's fine. Just don't complain when someone else reserves the right to call that behavior out as irritating.
