Next Season's Roster (All Trade, UFA Signing and Re-Signing Discussion) Part III

From Original Thread

Big questions:
1. Can we deal Heatley?
2. Should we re-sign White Wellwood?
3. How do we add more speed into the top 9 fwd set?
4. Answered - What should our top 4 dman be after Boyle, Demers, Vlasic. We need a Coburn, Burns, JBo?? We won't get Staal or Weber.
5. Seto Replacement?

Edit: 2011-12 RFA draft pick compensation
(offer sheet value (annual cap hit): compensation (2012 draft))

Less than $1,034,249: No compensation
More than $1,034,249 -- $1,567,043: Third-round pick
More than $1,567,043 -- $3,134,088: Second-round pick
More than $3,134,088 -- $4,701,131: First and third-round pick
More than $4,701,131 -- $6,268,175: First, second and third-round pick
More than $6,268,175 -- $7,835,219: Two first-round picks, a second and third
More than $7,835,219 and higher: Four first-round picks

Carry On

1. No way. Nobody is taking that contract.

2. If we can't pick up a decent shutdown guy then yes, but Id try free agency first.

3. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Uhm, it is broke. We didn't win the cup and we lost Seto to boot. It needs to be fixed. In fact, now that we got Burns, it's our primary concern.

1. I wouldnt if we could. Heatley makes defences pay more attention to him then other guys. it may not be on the scoresheet, but this drastically helps our offence. Also, he was leading the team in points before his wrist injury. Might not be the best, but far from the worst

2. No, didnt think he would be to begin with. much rather see a tougher defenceman come here then a soft puck moving one.

3. You sign a speed guy for the Thornton line (think Cole) and 2 speed guys for Pavelskis line. (Think Torres and Higgins)

No need to resign White at this point. They already have Boyle,Burns, and Demers. No need for another Right-handed PMD. If anything, they could use another lefty.

Sturm or Kobasew could be good fits on the 3rd line.

In my mind the Sharks need to not worry so much about next season and sign the guys they need to win the cup now. Don't get them NTC's, and worst case you end up trading them next off season. Or better, one or more of them replace Heatley and you deal him next off season when that should be fairly easy.

after the season, i wanted to keep Wellwood, but not anymore. the honeymoon stage is over. he has too many flaws. i'd like to see someone else in that spot.

wellwood is such an odd case. dunno.. he was good with us, and he was cheap. believe it or not, he had the highest point per buck in the playoffs for us. but that line got destroyed by the canucks line of laps torres higgins, and his size was a liability. if he's willing to sign 1 mil, it's hard to say no. he has good 2 way game, and the pavs/wellwood/mitchell line was fairly effective and pretty cheap. if we resign him for cheap, then we can add a good top 6 like leino, laich, tk, or whoever, and have our 3 scoring lines once again.

Even if we could, we shouldn't. He's overpaid, but his contract isn't bad. We just have to hope he can stay healthy. If so, I see an improvement.

Yes, if the price is right. I swear you couldn't get the puck from this guy if you had a gun to his head. He needs to be on a line with some size, though.

1-2 UFAs. There are a healthy amount of top 9 wingers on the market that we should be looking at signing. I'm sure some of them are pretty fast. We have the cap space to be competitive. We should also be picking up McGinn for a 4th line, bordering 3rd line role.

yup hes a full fledged UFA as of july 1st. awful asset managemnet by sherro. he'll get 2.5-3 easily off some team, with the amount of cap space teams are swimming in.

1. I wouldn't now. We lost Seto, we can't afford to lose Heatley at this point and don't need to cap wise. I mean I'm still fine with it if they can and can bring in say Lieno + Kennedy but that's a pipe dream. We'll trade him next off-season.

2. We don't really need a 3rd line center unless Pav's is going to play the wing in which case yes. That however is a bad idea because it makes our top 6 really slow. So we need to bring in a top-9 winger (or two) and put Pavs or Couture back on the 3rd line center role. I like Wellwood, a lot, but unless he puts on a lot of muscle this off-season, I think he's not the right answer.

3. Leino, Kennedy, Cole, Talbot, Kanopka, even Ferriero if need be.

4. Burns obviously, but we could still probably use a #6/#7 for depth.

5. Isn't this the same question as #3? Same answer. Shark's need at least 2 speedy forwards added to the mix.

I just pasted the original questions from the original post. I added Seto since he's been traded since these questions were originally asked.

New 21 man.

Trade Niitty for a pick to Avs/Phoenix/whoever
Sign Talbot to a 4 year $5m deal
Sign Kennedy to a 3 year $7.5m deal
Sign Leino to a 4 year $14m deal

CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,402,501; BONUSES: $587,500
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $897,499

Honestly I think it's a little bit wishful thinking. Those are bare minimum deal's for those guys, just assuming term is enough insentive. It also doesn't add a new #6. Mostly looking at makeup here to see what works.

I'm shocked McLaren was qualified and Schaus wasn't...I was hoping Davis would get qualified. The rest were easy choices.
