I think people better start getting a grip that it isn't just that we need better players, but maybe the management sees players under contract aren't sufficient and we will see some possible long time Sabres shipped out as well.
If they sign Erhoff to 5+, I don't think there is cash for a No. 1 center without being super creative. It's possible (as I sketched out in another thread), but it would be tight. even then, it would leave little room next year to sign Myers to a fat contract.
Do you think maybe Darcy, Black, and Pegula may be hedging their bets, in case they cannot get Richards, to be able to come up with a package to land another center via trade with Sekera as the focal point?
Do you really think Sekera would entice a # 1 center in return? I doubt it.
Ehrhoff paired with Regehr would actually be one hell of a tandem. I anticipate if you guys sign him it'll be for around $5.5M+ on a long-term deal. He was rumoured to be asking $5.3M out of Vancouver for a term of 6 years...I don't know if he'd give the same "discount" (as he saw it) to a team he has absolutely no connection/ties to. He was offered around $4.6M from Vancouver.
Either way, good luck!
God help us if the Sabres give him that long of a deal....
Especially knowing he was offered $4.6M from a good team, said no. Offered $5M+ (reportedly) from another team and said no.
Well, he turned down the Canucks because it wasn't enough. Turned down the Isles, but that could be either because it still wasn't enough OR because it was the Isles. We'll have to see whether he accepts 5M from the Sabres. If not, whatever, trade him to the next team. At worst its a waste of a 4th, big deal, we are still sitting on better picks next year than we had this year.
Ok we heard he was offered same or little more then Bieska, maybe with him being on 3 teams in less then 24 hours might wake him and agent up and saying we not getting the 5mill.And if we fail to sign him..oh well we gave up just a 4th round pick. and shows the Willingness of the new ownership to take risks and look for a reward!
If they sign both, wouldn't they have to buy out Kotalik and Morrisonn, as well as possibly deal Boyes in a salary dump?
Absolutely nothing wrong with that. We add a bunch of top-notch talent, lose a couple scrubs, and dump some salary. It's an option teams with deep pockets have at their disposal. Now that we're one of those teams - use everything in the toolbox, if that's what it takes.
Four years is the MOST I'd offer him. I know many are enamored with him but I'm afraid that he's one of those players that could just as quickly nosedive after 2 great seasons as he ascended out of nowhere. Plus, he doesn't seem to fit the "thickness" (physical, big & tough) that the Sabres need more of as much as he repeats what Leopold, Gragani and Myers already offer.
Wow. I am really shocked here. Just a couple hours ago I stated I would be shocked if the Sabres had much interest in bringing in a player of Erhoff's style or a defenseman at the kind of salary he'd demand. This indicates he's one of their top targets.
I suppose just acquiring his rights signals to the NHL (read: Brad Richards) that they are serious about aggressively improving their team. If they actually sign him then it might go a long way to establishing Buffalo as THE prime destination.
I'm not very comfortable with giving Erhoff the kind of money and term he's going to want on a team that is loaded with defensive prospects of all sorts and already has 3 offensively skilled defensemen. This certainly signals a trade of Sekera considering the money he and Erhoff would get, and further means the Sabres defensemen prospects will all be in play for future trades.
Considering we were 1 game away from winning the cup, I doubt it's that.
I'm not saying it's necessarily that in particular - but more making the point that there are a lot of other factors in play, and if the money is close, there's no reason to think that those other factors can't outweigh the money.
