You don't sign him because if a player is benched and Drew Miller is playing, they are going to perceive favortism even if there is none there. It's bad for Drew, Ryan, and Lindy. I think he's a good player, but why bring the potential for making your star goalie uncomfortable.
Why? There's no place for him. He's a lanky, speedy'ish grinder. Good on the PK, but other than that, he's pretty much a run of the mill kind of player.
Management already hurt the team last year by acquiescing to Miller's desire for a pet goaltender. I don't want to see them make the same mistake bringing in his brother when he doesn't fit.
Drew Miller has really developed into a solid two-way player for the bottom 6 in Detroit - and I think he'd be a great 3rd liner to help with PK and in a checking role, if Hecht were not already on the roster.
However, if Miller becomes available again next summer when Hecht's contract expires and Jochen will be 35, Ryan's brother would be a seamless replacement IMO.

This is exactly the kind of comment that makes me appreciate how little respect the work Jochen gets on this board.
Drew Miller is 27 years old. has played 200 games in the NHL, never more than 70 in a season and has only posted one positive +/- year ever and has played for very good clubs.
By the time Hecht was 27 he has played he played significantly more games, has only posted one negative +/- season ever (and this includes some time on BAD teams), has a reputation according to whoever hands out letters for being a leader.
Comparing the two is apples and canned oranges. Its alright to not be a Hecht fan, but seamless replacement? Drew Miller is a spare part. Hecht is an underappreciated but hard working player with talent. Miller's never broke 20 points, something that Hecht did 4 times by that age. I will concede, Miller does hit more, and Hecht's blocked shots declined in the last two seasons- however, I think that Hecht's game and PKing although less physical, is more effective than Miller at his best.
I'm sorry, I just don't see it. I see Miller as a spare part and a step below a guy like Kennedy. I've watched enough Detroit games to see that it looks like he is playing at his upside right now. and I'll take the 36 year old Hecht over Miller.

Reason: to give credit where due and not totally bash Miller.

Relax - Hecht has always been one of my favorites and I've always argued against the critics that bash him. Maybe the adjective "seamless" was a poor choice of words but I also watched enough Detroit games the past two seasons to see how quickly Miller has developed into a solid defensive forward and role player with a great work ethic and forechecking ability similar to Hecht. His skating and work along the boards reminds me of Hecht, and while he has nowhere near the resume of Hecht, I don't think it's as stark a contrast as you make it to be. That said, I don't think Miller will ever be capable of top 6 duties like Hecht has for most of his career been doing.

I've seen a lot of Detroit games too (thanks gamecenter) and I suppose I just don't see it. I just sort of see him as playing at his ceiling right now. I don't know, I don't see him as top 9 material. But to each their own.
and yes, I'm a huge Hecht apologist and have been for a long time. so I might have over-reacted.
