It would take massive cajones to mess with Sather by trying to offer sheet a Ranger. Besides, when it comes RFAs, Sather tends to drag it out. Callahan signed his last contract on July 13th, 2009.

Marc Staal, although he had no arb. rights....signed on September 15, 2010.

Dubinsky signed on Sep 23, 2009 . July 9, 2010 Girardi signed, and he had arb. rights.

Sather would immediately match anything $5.5M and under, methinks.

I think he ends up matching anything that isn't over $6.5M, and no sane GM will offer Ryan Callahan $6.5M, as valuable a player as he is.

As much as I love Cally, I wouldn't match anything over 5.5. Even that is a lot for Callahan. It's a moot point because I seriously doubt that he would sign an offer sheet to begin with.

And further more, nobody wants to create bad blood with Sather by trying to poach the Ranger's future captain.

Id say there is a ZERO.ZERO chance Burke offer sheets Sathers player

A career high 23 goals more or less says you're safe. Any offer would be matched as there is no way anyone goes over 4.

Ryan Callahan worked his ass up all the way to get to this point. The guy deserves it the most. he should be captain one day

Lets not forget that Dustin Penner had a career high 45 points when he got his 4.25 offer sheet.

He did have 29 goals though. And the Ducks were in serious cap trouble. Kevin Lowe took advantage, big time & Burke lost his freakin mind.

Just like the distance between Staal and Sather was "Not a large gap, a chasm".

It doesn't take much. He's very capable of doing so himself.

Are you guys saying that Sather would try to "get back" at any GM who sends an offer sheet Callahan's way? While it would definitely suck to have happen to your player a future move seeking retribution just for the sake of it would be a terrible way to run an organization.

This is just Barnett trying to up the price for his client. He has to try and put some pressure on Sather to bargain because Callahan has been so committed to the Rangers.

Cally had 23 goals, but that was in only 60 games. He was on pace for 30+ goals and 60+ points.

So.... $7,000,000 a year?

Not exactly sure what you mean by definition of a Ranger.

With Gaborik making what he makes and Sather planning on throwing piles of money at Richards, I can understand if Callahan wants to get paid too.

Everyone is saying he is the most important skater. Everyone is saying he is the heart and soul of the team. Everyone is saying he is the future captain of the team. So why is he expected to hold back just so Sather can spend on expensive free agents?

While he's very important to the team, he hasn't had Gaborik or Richards numbers at any point in his career, and probably won't. So 5+ million for a guy like him is a little much. He's a smaller, poor mans version of Adam Graves that's better defensively and a better penalty killer.

Sather is pretty good about rewarding homegrown players. Callahan and Dubinsky aren't going to get snubbed in this whole process. The Rangers have the cap space to pay them well and he doesn't tend to lowball guys in this situation.

This is just Callahan's agent stirring the pot a little, there's almost no chance at all that Callahan isn't a Rangers by the time the season starts. Both sides want to get a deal done.

Sather also tends to take his time with signing RFA's
