Burke in Afghanistan on Eve of FA Frenzy

Brian Burke in Afghanistan on eve of free agency

LONDON--Brian Burke doesn't have to be in Afghanistan today.

Heck, there's undoubtedly hardcore Maple Leaf fans who probably think he shouldn't be, but instead should be at home manning the phones and getting ready to knock on Brad Richards' front door on Friday when the NHL free agent season opens.

Instead, the Leaf president and general manager is with our Canadian troops in Kandahar, and that's where he'll be when Richards and other unrestricted free agents officially become available looking to make themselves extraordinary rich, or richer.

I think it's stupid. timing is just stupid. why would he be there at this time of all times? I mean, he invites criticism with a move like this.

Yes I know, cell phones, fax machines, assistant GM's....I still don't get it.

Go next weekend!

This is 2 out of 3 years where a majority of the signings seem like they will be handed to nonis.

Beauchiman and Komisarek were both Nonis signings, while Burke was trying to get the Sedins.

I'm still ok with this.

Was he not on a fishing trip of sort last summer as well, when Free Agency hit?

I know the Leafs have others more then capable in management, but it would have been nice to have our GM present during this crucial period. I'm sure teams that are chasing Richards will be more then present to speak to him. I doubt Sather with be off somewhere.

I suppose Leafs already have an idea of who they are, no big fishes, so they don't need Burke around.

Maybe I'm looking too much in to this.

Guys, the leafs brass has already had their meetings and set their price limits on all ufa's that their willing to sign.

Didn't I also read somewhere that it was some guy that did the negotiating? At least with the rfa's we signed.

I don't disagree that it would of been nice to have him here. Maybe he doesn't want to be around when **** hits the fan when we offer sheet stamkos

That's the thing though, with so few pieces available, and the Leafs stating that they want to be competitive in the FA market, setting limits is the way to lose.

Although, personally I agree that there is no reason to over spend this summer (even on Richards) but based on "July 1st is our 2nd draft" etc, etc, and how other teams are already hitting full stride to in terms of trying to improve their teams, setting prices is not going to put you on top with your shopping list.

Oh well, this is a for a good cause so we should all look at that first, besides I'm sure he is more then prepared for everything there.

No one should be concerned. I would be shocked to learn that Burke has actually completed a trade/signing himself during his TML tenure.

There's enough support staff up front.

Do you think Sather will go out of his way to meet Richards in person or will he speak to him over the phone?

This seems to be Burke's MO for whatever reason. Not sure why he does it, but as long as we get a #1 center, I don't care.

Now, if we miss out, that opens the door to 'wtf land'

An American born transplanted Canadian supporting our troops, how can one criticize this? Doesn't matter really, something tells me he has unofficially done his sales pitches already.

Hum, no.

He goes on a fishing trip every year around beginning of August for about 2 weeks.

It is a little unorthodox that your GM is not even in the country for one of the bigger days of the hockey off-season. I'm sure it's a non-issue however.

He's doing something great overseas and unlike what people think, he can't go when he wants to visit the troops. It's not like he's away at the cottage here folks.

Maybe because the 1st of July is Canada's anniversary? Some people never seem to amaze me. There are things after hockey you know?

It's great for Burke to be there on Canada day. I don't question the day he's going, it's obvious why. I'm concerned that he himself won't be meeting with Richards (he's one of the best at convincing FAs) but I don't have qualms with him for this. I'm sure he has a pretty good gauge on the Richards matter and knows a lot more about it than any of us or the media. I didn't think Richards was coming here before, and I'm a little more sure about it now. But, what can you do, you can't force the guy to come here.

Considering we pretty much have 3 GM's and all the technology in the world to communicate, I don't know why ppl would be upset.

Canada's anniversary? sheesh, we have one every year. you guys make it sound like it's a 25th wedding anniversary or something.

grab a hard hat free agency opens! this trumps it by like 100x

I like Burke, but this is a PR mistake.

Terry and Kim Pegula flew in to Regehr's summer home to talk to him about accepting the trade to Buffalo.

No offense, because I'm not sure you're really in that boat, but if you think this should look bad on Burke, you're pretty dumb.
