I like Burke, but this is a PR mistake.
Actually I think its the exact opposite, a PR boon. This will play very well in the media both sports and non-sports alike. It will also play well around the league.

Exactly, it makes even more sense now why they brought in a guy like Dudley who has a ton of experience

Yes I know, cell phones, fax machines, assistant GM's....I still don't get it.

Go next weekend!
You do know Luke is over there with him, the Canadian troops in Afghanistan mean a lot to the young Leaf blueliner, having the president of the team with him is bound to have a positive impact.

Rick Dudley also has a very good working relationship with Pat Morris, who just happens to be the agent for a guy the Leafs would dearly like to sign.

Burke at this point is more the President of the club than he is the GM. So no need to make more of this than it really is, that my friend would be stupid.

Are you saying that 1000+ teachers should show up on Richards front porch with coffee July 1?

Luke Schenn is not general manager of the Leafs.

I am not surprised with that but I really don't know if that is a good thing for Buffalo. Hope he turns out better than the other meddling owner in our division.

You're out-to-lunch if you think the every other GM will be at their desk all day on July 1.

My two cents.

If you are the head of this franchise and are at the brink of spending 50+ million. You better be there. I don't like it.

Good for Burke.

look...this means the UFA day groundwork has been done, the plan is designed and all that's left is for it to be followed. There are capable people left to do the grunt work.

In the past Burke has travelled miles and continents to sign a player he wants, he is like a dog on a bone if he thinks that's necessary, so obviously there is nothing left to be done that can't be done by ipad, skype, facetime, video conferencing, texting, tweeting.

Those who think this is a bad thing should give your head a shake.

He's the figurehead of the franchise, but not the head of it. I think it will come off badly to a lot more people once they realize the big Leaf signing will be a 3rd liner, like last year. But, it is a classy move for the troops.

Hahaha

Also, is there even a confirmation that Burke will be there? The article has zero quotes, just Cox's hearsay.

Good for him. He's got a competent front office behind him that I trust to make the right decisions. He's hardly on vacation anyway...

To me this means Burke isn't in the Richards sweepstakes...he either already knows the price/term isn't something he'd give out, or he knows that Richards doesn't have interest in us. I think Burkie knows that there would have to be a big sales pitch from him, on top of the huge offer to land Richards. A playoff team or cup contender can just hand the contract to Richards' agent, but for us we need to make him believe that we are a playoff team with him, and a contender in the near future. Nonis is a good hockey man but I don't think he is the man to 'sell' Toronto to Richards...I think a UFA of Richards' calibre won't feel as wanted getting the offer from the assistant GM.

Even though most around here don't believe it, this is what I'm thinking as well.
