How much was Smid making on his previous contract?

$2.25 seems like it is too much for a guy who hasnt improved his game much at all in the last few years. Smid was an RFA and the Oilers had the upper hand in negotiations.

I don't know why, but this guy seems to attract a league-wide level of hate amongst players.

Even teams that rarely play against the Oilers all seem to hate Smid.

Why is that?

Because he is a pest.

Aside from pecks, he is like the grittiest player on the team.

Realy love this signing, and at that prize. Think he has been pretty good, (or at least last part of the season).

It doesn't matter if you touch Khabby or Dubnyk, if you come within ten feet of Khabby or Dubnyk, you're getting a stiff arm to the face and mouthful of hate from Smid. He can handle his own most of the time, so I'm sure Smid is perfectly fine with the league-wide hate.

Happy with the signing. He comes up when all the kids need raises and our other dmen should be ready to step in. Pretty good value for our #3 dman too

A decent contract for a good player. I really like Smid, doesn't bring you huge offensive numbers but does his job perfectly which is defending. And like you guys said, he can really get under the oppositions skin with his pest-like play.

Exactly, not sure why Oiler fans wouldn't be happy with this deal at all.

Fair value. He had a great 2009-10 season before getting hurt. Coming into this season he still wasn't 100% and it showed. He was a little more hesitant to physically engage players. That's a big part of his game so he was struggling. In the 2nd half of the season he started to look more like his usual self and it sounds like he should be fully healed for the start of next season.

I have to say though, I don't see how he's a pest. He isn't a huge talker on the ice and he's willing to drop the gloves...he even takes off his helmet because he wears a visor.

slight overpayment but like has already been said he's a guy who is coming into his prime, he's a very solid to have in your 4-6 spot, good skater, doesnt mind getting physical and is probably still improving...

at two years its fine, not like this is going to hurt the oilers cap wise, with the cap raise this is probably what someone of smids position should be expecting from now on...

Cap hit doesn't even matter considering were below the cap floor. Good to see Smid's coming back, now get Peckham done please.

I like Smid and all, but I think this is overpayment to the tune of about 500k per. I hope this is not a trend Tambo is going to adopt.

I would have thought that $2.0m is about the right amount for a 2 year term, based on his minutes of play - but if he's overpaid, it's not a great amount (looking at the list of $2m defensemen on capgeek, he's in the right range.)

Smid was just on Team 1260 in Edmonton, and Gregor asked about the neck injury/surgery, and how he had challenges at the beginning of the season last year feeling healthy. Smid said that he's been working out for 2 months, and seemed confident - he's working towards becoming a top 4 guy. Personally, I think he'll be a fine physical 5-6, and for $2.25m/yr, I don't complain.

I will probably get shot as there is a large group of Oil fans that love his zero offense and bonehead mistakes.
Great signing. Now we just need to get peckham signed. Really don't get the smid hate. Your definately not a die hard oilers fan. If you were complaining about gilbert i would completely understand.
