When you see Sabourin in goal for us next year, remember we are probably only saving ~500K having him in goal over Varly.
I suspect Varly was offered a similar deal if not the exact same one. I doesn't make any sense to offer him less (or more). Wouldn't surprise me if Varly wanted $2+ per and the Caps said pass...

Pure speculation but he and his agent would have to be idiots to think he would get more than Neuvy. So I ASSume they didnt. Not happy with George's offer, I ASSume it was a tad less than Neuvy.

Its tough to know what the agent is saying and doing with his client. Varly seemed honest in his NHL aspirations. I think the kids usually leave anything financial up to their money starved agent, they are not financial analysts. Damn lawyers

I agree with you thought, I don't think Laich has the offensive skill set to play 2C. Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but I'd also put Johansson there ahead of Laich, if only to get him more experience in a prominent role so he can be even more of a monster come playoff time than he was last year.
Laich is close to a finished product. Johansson isn't ready for that responsibility against an elite team in the ECF or SCF.

If that's their plan, then they're literally trying to win a Cup 7-10 years into a "rebuild". In other words, milking the 8 cow.

So dumb:

“As far as Scott’s situation with the Capitals is concerned, the Capitals have not made any offer to date, but have indicated that they may very well speak to us on Scott’s situation subsequent to July 1st,” Meehan wrote in an email to The Washington Times.

translation, while I haven't talked to those suckers, and honestly, I don't expect to do so, if they magically back up the money truck, my client will be here next season.

10 years, $40 million for Erhoff. The money doesn't surprise me, but the term does.

Without trades it's looking like they'll have around $4 or $5 million dollars to play with. I figure that Alzner, Brouwer, and Sjogren are going to take $4-$5 mil off the current $9 million in cap room.

Of course the rumors of Semin or Green being moved are starting to sound more and more believable.

Would be interesting to see if they buy out Poti a la Sloan. Pretty sure Poti would clear waivers at this point.

My point is that there is never a finished product. Players are constantly evolving and trying to get better.

Johansson isn't ready for that responsibility, hence putting him in that role so that he can become ready.

Well, if a "big trade" does go down it better bring in a defensive defenseman because were officially back to square one on the blueline.

I wonder if Hannan didnt turn a little gun shy after KO'ing Gagne in game 1. I mean lets face it, if he wanted to start cleaning guys out, he could. And he did. While i dont think it was intentional, he did lay out Gagne pretty good. He didnt hit very much or as hard after that. IIRC.

These slower stronger guys (Hannan Sarge Erskine types) all have to use what they have to bring the team to the next level. They all cant watch Ovi and expect a miracle. Bruce to fix the PP overnight. Bring it!

Speaking of defensemen, I was impressed with Hedman's play against us. He seemed very confident of himself. He seems ahead of Sarge in his development.

i'm actually ok with taking time on the UFA defenseman market. i think there's a bit of a glut and over the last few days things have shifted from 4.6 per for blaska and campbell's contract actually being able to be moved (still in shock, yes i know it's tallon) to 2.7/year for montador and 4.0/year for ehrhoff even though we don't know how outrageously front-loaded the 10 year contract is yet.

i think scott hannan just got a million dollars cheaper in the last two days. or maybe someone like huskins or hamrlik can be picked up for 2-3 (probably more for hamrlik).

i doubt its dumb. it might be, but i doubt it.

the term "offer" often means a contract that the player can sign.
it doesn't mean negotiated positions. "offer" is like when you put an
offer in on a house. its a signed legal document that you are obligated
to if accepted. the no offer comment is often taken here as if there has
been no negotiating at all.

clearly here, meehan is saying he has a line of communication with mcphee
who says he would like to keep the player.

my read is that hannan would like to stay but would rather have a 4 year contract.
mcphee has told meehan that he won't do 4 years. the result is that meehan is taking
hannan to the market to search out that 4 year contract. if its not there, mcphee
is prepared to talk details on a lesser term.

we've already seen mcphee roasted here for 6 years and $4.5m for laich. if meehan's conditions for signing pre july 1 are in the roasting zone, he is both dumb for signing the guy and dumb for not signing him.

Or instead of perpetually rebuilding, find a creative solution to solve your #2 C while Johansson fills out on the 3rd line.

It's not a rebuild. Johansson demonstrated that he was ready for that role in the regular season last year, as well as in the series against the Rangers. He will be fine at 2C in the regular season and that much more prepared come playoff time.

NO! Majo needs to put up Datsyuk like numbers with Chimera and Hendricks. Only then can he be trusted to man the second line.
