He would have got something like 3yrs/12M as UFA. This is a great deal for Canes.

Subtitle for this thread 'Never Believe Anything Jim Rutherford Says About Impending Free Agents'. One week ago: "We're not close to re-signing any of our UFAs, we're looking into trades to replace them." Monday morning: "We were close with one but things have changed and it's not looking likely." Today: "Oh yeah, we re-signed Pitkanen, Dwyer, LaRose and Jokinen." I'd expect Cole to happen sometime tonight, lol.

Yeah probably from the Rangers. Even their waterboy gets 5 a year.

Fixed, seems to be the common Pens' fans sentiments

Great deal for Carolina.

Both Pitkänen and Jokinen went under their market value.

Guess that when they told to the Finnish media that they both wanna play for Hurricanes they were speaking the truth

I see from my crystal ball that Jokinen will have the best season yet.

The other option is to lose those UFAs, and replace them with....?

Carolina already has a good young core (Staal, Ward, Skinner, Sutter, McBain, plus solid prospects) so they will not be able to tank all the way to 30th. The UFA market is horrible and Carolina is a budget team anyway, so improvements aren't realistic. JR has done a pretty good job of retaining a decent team without overspending.

That's what you did. You didn't mention that Jussi has been averaging 60-point pace last two seasons. Getting him at 3M$ is a great deal, look what Laich got and who're left in UFA-markets.

Jussi Jokinen is one of my favorite 'Canes players, and I am very happy that he resigned. Especially for that amount!

One story that shows just how classy this guy is is, after his 30 goal season in 09-10, he called Rick Tochett (his coach in Tampa, which was disastrous to say the least) and apologized for not producing under him and getting him fired.

He is a class act on and off the ice, and I for one am glad that he is here to stay.

Wow he signed for cheap and it's only for 3 years too!

I think it's almost comparable as Burrows contract.

But yeah, amazing signing for Carolina. This guy could've gotten 4 mil and even 5 from a team like Florida.

We're a small market team. It's not like we can easily just go out and replace these guys with UFAs. We would love to go out and get guys like Ehrhoff, Richards, etc, but we can't compete with teams with big pockets like NYR, Toronto, etc.

The Canes have to develop their own talent along with re-signing their best FAs, because they're not going to sign many UFAs or enter many bidding wars in trades or with UFAs.

I suppose the other option is to accept that the team isn't going to improve dramatically based on the status quo, so trade some of those good assets for a quick rebuild.

Oh, those two silly Oulu boys don't know their value...

Seriously, both guys decided not to go for the big bucks but stay with the team they feel comfortable playing for. Someone could say that's just stupid, someone could say that questions their desire to go outside their comfort zones but one could also see this as a classy move.

Great move for the Canes. They retain their two most important pieces and gives their fans something to keep cheering about.

Cole knows he needs to stay in Carolina, he left once before and it didn't work. That will make 3.

Well in Jokinen's case he had that disastrous stint in Tampa Bay. He knows the grass isn't always greener. He's found a home in Carolina, a team that took a chance on him and he's happy there. He probably could have gotten more money but it wouldn't have necessarily been a better situation so he worked out a deal that's beneficial to both himself and the Canes. Good for him.

We've got plenty of assets, some are NHL ready waiting to get their chance. Re-signing Pitkanen and Jokinen allows us to remain competitive while easing the prospects into the line up instead of just throwing them into the fire right away. So I wouldn't call these signings "keeping the status quo."
