Good Lord....6-6.5 million for erhoff is crazy....at this point i would almost want MG to keep the cap space until the deadline and then really load up

I don't know why but the more money Ehrhoff gets the better I'll feel about him leaving.

Schadenfreude?

Wow. That's 10% of the budget going to Ehrhoff. Do not want!

Who is going to replace him though? I hope it's not going to Ballard.

I'm just throwing this out there to gauge what other people think as I haven't put any thought into it, but Boston is apparently walking away from Kaberle.

Any interest if we dumped Ballard?

I still don't get why people are surprised Ehrhoff would get 6M+.

Too much money available to too many teams.

It's a **** UFA crop.

I'm just curious as to what Richards is going to get. At this rate I wouldn't be surprised if its close to 8M per.

Edler is better than Ehrhoff, and Tanev has potential to be better than Ehrhoff. As long as Gillis picks up a legitimate top 6 Forward with the cap space we're fine.

Wowzer, so he really took 6.5M (that's what I'm hearing...)? Granted our blue line won't be pinching as much but now I am no longer too unhappy about him leaving. That cap space will hopefully serve to get Kesler his winger - but I'm praying that Gillis will be smart and do it via trade since the UFA forwards crop is fairly dry and teams have too much money to burn.

Glad he's in Buffalo and not in the West.

Well, good for Buffalo. I dont' mind them, I feel a sort of 40 years of failure kinship with them.

Yep. They're the Canucks of the East. Hopefully we don't mimic their years as a top team in the NHL.

Ehrhoff = Campbell.

Yeah, this sort of morphed from a speculative tweet to fact without any proof or links.

Pretty sure it's still a rumour people.

Replacing Ehrhoff's offense won't come down to one guy, IMO. It will be replacement by committee--Bieksa, Hamhuis, Ballard and Edler will all need to chip in a bit. Edler and Bieksa certainly have that offensive ability, and Ballard has (hopefully) nowhere to go but up from his 7 point performance last year.

We can sign or trade for someone, it's not like we don't have the cap space.

Not surprised Ehrhoff was highly coveted and will be one of the highest paid dmen in the league - his skillset is extremely hard to come by.

I still don't understand how you can pay Kevin Bieksa $4.6mil and balk at paying Ehrhoff $5.5mil. That'll go down as one of Gillis' bigger mistakes IMO.

I mean really, isn't Ehrhoff at $5.5mil a similar hit as what Willie Mitchell got when he signed in Vancouver? Don't remember many people calling that a terrible contract and it's hard to argue Willie was the better player...

I still think Gillis has the delusion that Weber will be UFA pretty soon. If he locks up Ehrhoff with an NTC, he can't go after Weber. But as we've seen with Montador and other FAs, nothing is a guarantee.

This is why it is so important to draft well. You can maintain costs and you aren't constantly looking for solutions outside the organization.

Agreed.

This is why Jersey has been good for so long. Then they eat **** one year and come out with Larsson? Just lucky.

Detroit ALWAYS has found guys.

Nashville and LA have amazing depth in both organizations.

Gillis knows this is key and has spend major $$ to improve our drafting.

Unfortunately it won't help for atleast a few more years.

Bieksa is far more well rounded a defenseman than Ehrhoff.

Pretty much. Mitchell's was 8% of the cap back then and Ehrhoff at $5.3 (the rumored amount he was willing to sign in Vancouver for) would be 8.2%.

Everyone was jumping over themselves to argue that Bieksa's $4.6 million must be put in the context of a rising cap but few seemed to put Ehrhoff's potential raise in that light. $5.3 million today is roughly $4.5 million in 09-10. That's +/- $500K of what guys like Hainsey, Liles, Meszaros, Roszival, Gilbert, and Kubina were signing for.

Now if Ehrhoff was demanding $6+ million from the Canucks that's another matter, but it sounds like they were expecting him to take a sub $5 million deal.
