That would have given the Kings three centers who are excellent defensively.
Still may be Los Angeles. Perhaps the Kings plan to move Stoll for cap space and to accommodate him if Richards decides on LA. If Richards decides on LA then Stoll might be gone anyway though, but this would be even better.

All this is possible because Smyth wanted out.

Are you ready to admit that, after arguing for months that Smyth's contract wasn't going to have an effect on anything Lombardi wanted to do this summer?

If Lombardi adds B Richards in addition to M Richards and Smyth and Stoll are elsewhere next season I will be a bigger Lombardi fan than Kings17

Brad might have been Plan A all along, Mike might have been the one to fall into Lombardi's lap. In which case, catch while catch can. And there's still a (however slim) shot at Brad.

Once Lombardi's book comes out, we will learn that he used inception to plant the idea in Smyth's head that he wanted to go home.

Not that Stoll is amazing, but he's not too shabby defensively either.

Geeze some of the deals signed today were RIDICULOUS. And they were all about money. Richards is not coming here and that is a good thing. Especially at his age and contract demands.

Sign Gagne (though it will be a big overpayment it looks like) or trade for a LWer. Or hell, give Parse a shot and see how he does.

Crazy day.

The asterisks mean clearly not. Even Eklund is more credible than these people, and I'm guessing who this is because I can't tell, and I'm not joking.

Gillis said earlier today that Tambellini would play in Europe. So I guess it is true.

Exactly. Meanwhile, Herby's token still hasn't stopped spinning and it probably never will. Smyth could have been bought out, other players could have been traded, any number of moves could have taken place to get the Kings into a cap situation that would allow them to do what they have been doing this off season.

Mike Richards falling into Dean's lap was a huge bonus, but a deal like that was always part of the plan as soon as the opportunity was available.

The Kings would not have been able to add Mike Richards, make a serious push for Brad Richards and still sign Doughty without Smyth's full $6.2 off the books. If you want to keep telling yourself that, go right ahead, it just wasn't happening.

Had Ryan Smyth not wanted to leave the Kings would have been stuck with a massive contract, a crappy player in the Top 6 and another year without contending. By the grace of god he wanted out and now Lombardi and the Kings are taking full advantage, we should all be very happy.

It was still a shortsighted and awful move at the time and could have prevented us from contending this year.

BTW, is Smyth still a "Pro's Pro" or did the whole quitting thing turn you off?

For one, I was being sarcastic about the GM of the year comment.

Secondly, I had no problem with Smyth playing his contract out and if by some miracle the Kings did sign B Richards, they could have bought out Smyth and still fit under the cap or dumped salary some other way.

Yep. Even in Hollywood big presentations like that take more than a couple days to put together. The Kings obviously have had their sites on B. Richards for a while and had a plan to shed salary if needed.

Smyth wanting to head home just made it easier in the end.

I know you weren't responding to me but..

I believe I heard on the morning news that Kobe Bryant is in Europe somewhere having experimental surgery. Apparently he was on the video that was shown to Richards which to me suggests that the Kings intended on offering Richards a contract well before the Smyth situation happened.

Yeah it turned me off. I thought it was pretty ****** unless of course he has a family emergency he just isn't telling people about. Otherwise, he should have just stuck it out for another year and moved back to Alberta.

1. Cap space only matters when you're near cap. We weren't till this year so Smyths "massive" contract didn't matter.
2. Smyth had more goals then all but two of this years UFA forwards. Not exactly bad.
3. We could have always moved him. Smyth was not and wouldn't have been the key factor. If we needed the space he was gone. Frankly, he was perfect for any of the bottom dwellers. High cap hit but not actually a high salary. So you could get to the floor but not pay the money.... I think people aren't noticing just how many teams are going to be on the floor or in reality far below it.

4. Who cares? All he did was score a few goals, play a hard game, and level when we could upgrade. Think you should just drop it. Guy was the best of a bad situation....
