Dowell is similar to Burish.

Oh, wow surprised it wasn't posted. Stars signed Jake Dowell to a one year $800,000 deal and it's a one way contract.

Good deal on Dowell, he had 21 points in 79 games with Chicago last season

Could Fiddler be the 3rd piece of the checking line trio with Ott and Burish?

Then send Wandell to Benn and Louis line?

Ive watched pardy play a few times, he is ok on defense...from the small sample size i have seen..

Will be a reasonable player on the 3rd paring..Averaged about 14 min a game over his career..

Wandell would have to significantly upgrade his game o deserve a place on the top two lines. Love the potential there, but he's still a huge work in progress at this point.

I would assume Ott or Burish would bounce back and forth between the wing on the second line depending on who's healthy and who has chemistry. Ott's a 20-goal type guy when he plays with quality centers. Dowell probably gives them enough redundancy with third liners that either of them can slide up.

Finally home so can comment on the signings...

Like the Dowell signing. Really like the Fiddler signing. Dvorak am fine with. Pardy, well he can't be worse than Woywitka.

Am honestly just happy we were activate more than anything.

The depth guys we got tonight fit a specific mold - good PKers or FO% guys who can pop 20-30 points a season. Some veteran presence in all these guys.

It reminds me of what Joe said last year when he fired Crawford. He didn't like the lack of depth when injuries came and he didn't seem to like that our bottom 6 guys weren't be useful during PK and stuff. He seems to want the bottom 6 to be good grinders, PKers, defensive guys who can pop a few a year, leaving time for the top 6 to play less on the PK and do their thing. A more balanced roster.

I like it.

I fully endorse this. Your post got me wondering what the PK/TOI breakdown was during the 1998-99 season, specifically forwards:

Carbonneau
Modano
Lehtinen
Keane
Skrudland
Reid

I know Nieuwendyk is the GM not the coach, but I'd be surprised if what he wants to see out of his players would be a similar breakdown. In this case Benn would be the Modano alpha male player who plays all sides of special teams, and Ribeiro the Nieuwendyk type who doesn't really kill penalties in order to stay fresh for 5-on-5 and for the PP. I do see Eriksson as being a guy who should still kill some penalties. As such an all around player as he is I would be surprised if he didn't gain some kind of competitive edge by killing penalties as well as getting PP time and plenty of ES time. I'm not so worried that all of our PK'ers need to be bottom six players, just so that things are more balanced than they have been.

With any luck this should spell the end of the Barch experiment.

Fiddler is the best signing of the first day of the Free Agent Frenzy. Probably THE most underrated player in the NHL right now.

If you have to ask who players are, then don't comment on the roster moves. The Stars weren't going to sign a superstar. Your expectations were child-like in ignorance and stupidity.

Read up and you'll find each player brings a strength or attribute to this Stars roster.

Just because Fiddler or Dvorak are not superstars doesn't mean their useless. An ideal team needs a gritty bottom six to be successful. Each of those players you aimlessly throw aside bring their own contributions - which is improving the PK. A true HOCKEY fan knows this. Which is why your evaluation lacks any form of credibility and reflects ignorance.

Don't even bother, it seems that every time I see this guy post, it's just to ***** about things regardless of the teams involved.

One additional tidbit on Dvorak. We've talked about what he'll hopefully bring to the PK, yes, but we shouldn't overlook his even-strength play either.

He had a 1.96 5v5 GA/60 last season. To compare, only Wandell and Burish on the Stars would've been less likely to be scored on while they were on the ice, and I think we would all agree that they are solid defensive players. Eerily, Dvorak also had a 1.96 5v5 GF/60. So he breaks even, which is great for a 4th liner.

Not going to hurt you out there, which should be extremely refreshing after basically living in fear of our 4th line these past seasons.

You forget, they still have Barch.

Maybe. It's yet to be seen what the new coaching staff thinks of a 4th liner who loses every fight, is a defensive liability, and can't keep a cycle going to save his life. My guess is we probably shouldn't be penciling in Wathier as a 1st liner in Cedar Park next season.

A higher budget doesn't only have to be used for adding players -- it can also be used to subtract them. Burying Barch in the minors could have a similarly positive impact as a new acquisition.

Jake Dowell vs. Brandon Segal

Jake Dowell vs. Steve Ott (Doesn't take the opportunity to unload on Ott when he's vulnerable)

It's funny Razor mentions the code when Dowell doesn't just destroy Ott when he has the chance, but I've never heard Razor saying anything when Ott is given the opportunity and he takes it. Ott has done that to Jarome Iginla and I believe it was Ruslan Salei (after the hit in a Colorado game that got him suspended).

Throws most of the punches with Iginla on the ice.

I was wrong about Salei. He really did let up after he hurt him.

I really didn't realize Dowell was a fighter. He had 9 fighting majors last year.

More importantly, he only had 9 minor penalties playing over 900 minutes in 79 games.

In about 230 minutes in 44 games, Krys Barch had 5 minors with 12 fighting majors.

If the guys playing 60 or more games, only Eriksson, Petersen, Richards, and Wandell had less penalties against than Dowell.

Oh man .... Steve Ott led the league in minor penalties. Brenden Morrow was tied for 9th.

I'm optimistic something is done about him. If I had to guess, I'd say Crawford liked Barch and wanted him re-signed last offseason and that's why he got the two-year deal. I just have a hard time thinking a new set of eyes will miss what is apparent to even the untrained hockey eye.

Best part about this fight card?

He beat Segal and arguably drew with Ott. He's arguably not a heavy weight but he plays by the code.... He also doesn't like Dorsett.
