JUST A THOUGHT
I would love to see a tandem of Vokoun and Smith, but I don't think its likely. Not saying it couldn't happen though

To get to our designated cap space? We have alot. We are not going to be a cap FLOOR team. We havent been even with the NHL owning the organization the past 2 years.

Never say never, after all, Bill Gates might like a hockey team . . . Phoenix Macrohard? Nah, sounds like a weird porno. Arizona Windows? No. Phoenix Gatekeepers. I know, the Phoenix MS-Coyotes!

Wasn't he in the AHL last year? Did he go through waivers?

PHOENIX (AP) - The Phoenix Coyotes have signed left wing Raffi Torres and goalie Mike Smith to multiyear contracts.

Phoenix is still looking for a top-line goalie after trading away the negotiating rights to Ilya Bryzgalov, who recently signed with Philadelphia.

Interviewing Smith on TSN right now, saying reuniting with Tip, the chance to be the #1 guy and working with Burke were all important factors to signing.

Wasn't Smith thought pretty highly of as a goalie at one point? The centerpiece of the Richards trade. One thing Smith odes well is he handles the puck, something Tip likes. At the very least he helps the D men out back there.

Playing behind a Tippett coached team is definitely a bonus for any goalie. Becoming the #1 will be all up to him. Consistently playing well will put him in a good position...

Oh no! Another Bryzgalov? How awful

Sounds like a good enough option. There's a strong argument that Sean Burke, Dave Tippett and the Coyotes style of play is just as responsible for Bryz's strong play as the player himself.

I'm okay with this signing, I wanted Vokoun, but with our ownership situation, I expected this. I will gladly welcome his puck handling, something Bryz was terrible at doing.

There was a time when Mike Smith was viewed in the same light that a lot of us view Cory Schneider.

I hate to play Devils Advocate, here, but I'm pretty sure Mike Smith will blow this whole Tip and Burke made Bryz theory that the Don is selling and some of you are buying.

We have a good head coach who incorporates a system advantageous to gaudy goaltending statistics. That doesn't mean its easy to be a goalie in a Tippett system.

Sean Burke may or may not be a great coach. Allure had his hands on Bryz before Burke ever met him. Don't forget who turned Burkes career around back when he was a goalie.

Jason LaBarbera and Mike Smith is the most pathetic looking tandem(on paper) that I can remember. I had higher hopes for the Auld, Tellqvist, Aebischer situation. To me, that was more like having two mike smiths. LaBarbera is all growed up. He is exactly what he is. A well liked but below average back up goalie. He will never be anything significantly better than that. Our hopes now hinge entirely on mike smith figuring it out.

He will be thirty years old this season. Thirty.

If he doesn't figure it out we are looking at a lottery pick. There's nobody disagreeing with that rt. We're just accepting things for the crappy (ownership) situation that it is and hoping for the best. If you can't be optimistic on July 1st, when's a good time?

Other options don't look good. If Varly cost a 1st and a 2nd from a non playoff team, despite the injury issue and the flight risk, than clearly Schneider and Rask were out of the question. Same with the other two goalies in Washington. If Nabby isn't a Coyote, there's a reason. I can accept that. Vokoun? Well, we'll see. The fact that he's not in either Denver or Phoenix is probably an indication of outrageous contract demands.

Basically, we didnt have any options. of all the crap laying in the trash heap, there are more reasons to think smith could be salvaged than any of the other junk tenders.

We had no options.

Varlamovs price tag was outrageous. Indicative of the price associated with his peers.

The fact that the Avs did that rather than sign Vokoun probably means he's looking for a Bryz deal. Not an option.

Nabby isn't here. Whatever the reason is, I trust Don its a good one.

Back the garbage heap. Of all the unwanted, misfit goalies laying in the trash, Mike Smith provides more reasons to believe that once we hose off all the ****, get him all fixed up, and put him in the hands of the staff, that he might, maybe, possibly be salvageable.

We will live and die by Mike Smith this year. I trust GMDM with this signing. He hasnt given me any reason to doubt him so far.

And there is still time to make more moves.

I don't remember seeing anyone say that. I said that there are arguments that they are as responsible as the player. So now it's up to Smith to do his part, I think most of us agree that Tippett and his system will do their part. Sean Burke deserves the benefit of the doubt for now....not that any of us really know what we're talking about when we blame the goalie coach if a goalie plays bad.

At least Smith fits the Burke mold, and it will be nice to have a puck-handling goalie. Hopefully a good puck-handling goalie.

Why are you pretty sure Mike Smith is going to fail? We are talking about a 30 year old goalie here.....which is probably the average age when goalies come into their prime. They keep talking about how well he played in the playoffs...and we all know the Coyotes will be playing playoff style hockey all year.

I hope he is salvageable because he's got great size and puck moving ability and he seemed to play better especaically in the limited gms this playoff year with Tampa, I would rather have him in goal than Laberbera.

When I learn more about the Vokoun and Nabokov situations, I will end up being okay with this. I can understand why they would go with smith over Theo or leclaire. I can. Other than that, there are not options.

If it turns out they really only had Theo, smitty, and pascal to choose from, I'm good with the choice.

I want Vokoun. Plain and simple. I can't imagine any other teams after him other than obviously Florida, Edmonton, and us.
