Jan was definitely a good player for the majority of his contract here, although he regressed this past year (who didn't) and some of that may be attributed to injuries.

For 4 years, you have to let him walk. He's 33 and looks to have lost a step.

Best of luck to him in COL, it's a beautiful part of the country.

Agree. Would be nice if you could always account for a player's personal/off-ice stuff (i.e. wanting to stay, kids in school, etc) but it can't always happen. This is why I couldn't be a GM.

Nice guy for the franchise, but I wondered how effective he would be down the line after the injuries he'd had.

No hard feelings here either. See you down the line, Jan.

3.25 per year.

Not a horrible amount. Just 2 years too long.

Good luck Jan (Mr. Hip Check), it has been fun watching you rub out snipers through the years. Good luck to you and your family!

I liked Jan for his first few years here and the fact that he actually wanted to be and remain a Blue Jacket.

I won't really miss him, though.

I'm happy for Hedja that he got his contract, I'm just happier it wasn't with us. He was a badass mofo for us for a long time, but it's time for him to move on. Good luck Jan!

Best wishes Jan. You'll be missed in Columbus. You're a class act.

My thoughts exactly. On another note, I have to say that I'm excited for this upcoming season, at least compared to past seasons anyway.

Good for him to get that kind of deal. Nice way to wind down his career and ensure a sound future for his family.

Agree that non-move by Howson makes sense. I do think we will miss him this year, but it leaves space for some of our young guys to grow into. With Moore, Savard, Goloubef, Weber, and others in the pipeline, a four year deal for Hejda clearly does not make a lot of sense.

Methot is going to have to take a step up this year as I see him playing a lot in key situations. Tyutin will be relied on heavily too, hopefully he is up for the challenge. And The Wiz is going to have to earn his 5.5 mill...

Very true on Methot, Fedor and the Wizard. Methot can be a great shutdown guy I think, and he really started to come into his own last year when we started off so well. Tyutin I wish was not on our top pair - I'd prefer him as a #3 guy... but I guess we gotta play with the hand we're dealt. To be honest, I'd prefer Methot on the top pairing with Wiz.. But I think Howson will get the #4 guy he is going after to form a serviceable second pairing.

The amount he wanted from Columbus for a four year term was below $ 3 million per year. Hedja was giving the Jackets a "home town" discount. Nevertheless, I also completely understand why the Jackets did not want to lock themselves into a four year deal with him. As someone noted above, 2 years would have been just about right. But from what I know Hedja's demand for a 2 year deal was above $3.25 per year.

Jan was my favorite, and I'll miss him

That said, I'm realistic and I understand not resigning him. Good luck out there Jan (but not too good against your old club (us, not Edmonton))

The Blue Jackets had negotiated with Hejda as recently as this morning. But the Jackets were unwilling to give Hejda, 33, a fourth-year in the contract, and the two sides were at least $500,000 apart per year.
$500,000 apart? Defenseman? Colorado? Where have I seen this before? Maybe it was the Dman he was paired with for a while in 07-08...
