Wonder if his wife still looks good. In her day she would have been an upgrade from Ms Virginia IMO....players section seating ftw...

Love this move. Count me in.

I've been a long time Halpern supporter and am very happy he is back with the team.

Good leader, stands up for his teamates, decent offensively, decent defensively, good on face offs and has some grit.

Very happy. Huge upgrade over Gordon.

I heard Halpern took skating lessons from a woman in Maryland a summer ago which helped out his skating enough to get a mention on the NHLNetwork

He is an upgrade over Gordon if he too can stay healthy.

Best Halpern moment was in the Penguins series where we lost on Martin Straka's takeaway. Game one went to overtime and Halpern scored to win it. That goal & its celebration. I think we lost in 5 though.

Potentially best story of the year in that he could end his career winning a Cup for the Caps. Next year's Masterton nominee probably.

(why was Sergei Berezin considered a bust? got him for nothing; he was decent for 10 games then retired)

ed: I just watched the Straka footage for the first time in 10 years... damn you Sergei Gonchar

there's something fairly poetic about gordon, who replaced halpern, being replaced by halpern.

hope geoff halpring's brings his a game. would love to see something good happen with him on the squad.

If we lift the Cup, I'm hoping he's one of the first few players it gets passed to.

That'd be cool to see. Halpern>Gordon, but it's marginal.

Halpern vs. Gordo may be close, but Halpern vs. Gordo at a 50% price premium is not close.

Halpern deserved another contract.

He's a great teammate and a great guy. Put up good points, too. I wish him luck.

Hamrlik sucks. Blocks a ton of shots, but other than that....

Grew up loving Halpern as a kid and was really sad to see him go. This is really nice- just as a fan. Its also a sweet addition to our fourth line, a cheaper replacement for Gordo, an upgrade in offense for the 4th line, and a great addition of veteran leadership from a guy who will be very hungry for a Cup here. Halpern is guaranteed to play his heart out here come playoff time. This is the lowest profile move they've made so far, but one that really puts a smile on my face. Halpern coming back is like bringing back a little bit of Dale Hunter. This man is a true Capital. Welcome home Jeff; we missed you.

It really seemed (& understandably so) that he lost a lot of desire the year after his mother (& grandmother) were killed in an accident in Florida. You would have to think that she was a hockey mom while he was growing up & going to the rink was just a reminder of the loss. My heart really went out to him since I have never really recovered from losing my mom.

what a horrific accident his mom's was. I never forgot about that. My friend knew his mom.

Another friend lost his sister in law to a stroke today. Age 40... marathon runner, while jogging. If you dont know how to tell if someone is having a stroke, figure it out. I like the T to stand for tongue, is it straight?

Keep an eye out for yourself too.

You get 3 hours of debating going to the hospital to figure it out. Dont wait.

Halpern mom's accident still sticks with me. Can't forget the details of that.

Sorry for your friends sister in law, randy. The best thought I have for any passing is that 'they were needed elsewhere'.

Ah before I get all gushy over Halpern's return, didn't he want out of here like a rat leaving a sinking ship when Ted announced the rebuild? To join Dallas's budding dynasty?

Anyhoo, he was on 106.7 this morning, I turned it on just when I got to work. Anyone hear any of the interview?

Not how it went down. He was offered good money by Dallas. Money the Caps wouldn't have matched. I don't blame the guy for getting paid when his one shot for a big free agent contract came.

Ok. I thought there was a lot of talk when he left that he didn't want to stick around on a rebuilding team.

Might be true. But it's not like he left for less money. At the time, the contract Dallas offered was about twice as much per annum as we expected Halpern to get. Dallas was a 100-point playoff team to boot.

yea, the dallas contract was a four year contract at fairly large money.
yes, taking an offer from a stanley cup contender while leaving a rebuilding last place
team, would suggest he would rather win than lose.

i think if you go back and find halpern's comments at the time, after his knee injuries
jeff, iirc, thought his career was an injury away from over. that he neither could turn down
the security of a 4 year contract nor was he sure he would be playing in the league when
the caps were ready to compete.

i used to live in sarasota fl. i passed by that spot where jeff's mon was killed
often. not a good day

I have to disagree with this.

Their face off percentage is similar.

Halpern has scored 10+ goals many times in his career...not sure if the boy ever once did that. He may have but I don't think so.

Halpern has 10x the tenacity and grit that Gordon had. I never seen Gordon stand up for a teamate. One memory of Halpern was taking on the much larger Kyle McLaren(?) after he destroyed (and pretty much ended) Calle Johansson's career..or the good parts of it.

Halpern falls down alot less.

Halpern is better along the boards.

I'm not in the locker rooms or anything but something tells me Jeff is far more vocal than Gordon.
