In my mind this is a terrible, terrible move.

Budaj has skill, but his main problem is he is very, very mentally weak.

He will play well for a few games, let in a bad goal and play like an AHL'er for the next two weeks. Really not the type of guy you want in a pressure cooker like MTL.

That's not good. He could be traumatized in Montreal.

he is very athletically talented, but he can't ever seem to get past his bad goals. The only reason he is a manageable backup is because he can get on hot streaks.

Also, if he lets in a bad one early in a game, he's going to give up three or four guaranteed.

I don't mind Budaj. If he doesn't do the job he can be replaced pretty easily.

Turco would have probably been a better mentor but Budaj will play like 5 games so who cares?

Might aswell be talking about who they signed as water boy.

I have no problem with this. As Price's backup the pressure is off. Talent wise, Budaj is more than comparable to Auld. Neither is going to take your team anywhere as a starter, but Budaj is more than capable of playing in the league as a backup. The mental fortitude being asked of him by Mtl is far, far less than what he experienced as the Avs heir apparent.

Surprised, certainly underwhelmed... but to be fair I felt the exact same way last year and Auld did very well.

Haven't seen him play at all being in COL, but from what I've read he has decent skills.. just has never put it together. Sometimes a new goalie coach can make a big difference, just look at the change in Price with Pierre Groulx, and how well Auld did.

So Mr. Groulx, work your magic again please.

They must have put a value a guy who's had recent #1 experience, in case of long-term Price injury. I liked Auld here & there, but for a long stretch... maybe a Groulx-corrected Budaj is a better choice.
We'll see.

I don't really understand this.

We should've signed a guy who is resigned to a back-up role for under this salary.

Whatever. Not a make or break deal by any stretch.

wwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

That's all i see in this thread.

First of all, excellent signing.

Pete will play more than 20 games so that when we go into the playoff Carey Price will be ready and in shape.

OH and we're gonna win the Cup next year.

I believe one reason Auld signed for cheap with Ottawa is that he believes he can be a starter there.

Alright so most of us are not too keen on this move...

Perhaps under the Jacques Martin system, a healthier crop of defence, dare I say slightly upgraded...and an upgraded forward crop...under those conditions we may equal or surpass 96 points AND see acceptable numbers from Peter Budaj...

But yeah I wanted Auld back..and Halpern...sigh...

meh, I was hoping our backup would be capable of 20 or so games a year, looks like it's another 70+ for Carey.

A lot of you might be mad with this signing, but to be quite honest, Montreal is a pure goalie town and we make goalies here year after year. Budaj is at that age where he could break out finally, if not, he's a backup...

He can be inconsistent, but Budaj should be a very capable back-up for us. I think people should calm down a bit.

Only great words coming from Darche and Laperrière. Great teamate and a great guy to be around. Only needs to be a great goalie next...
