Leino's offensive upside is still a big if, but he's a player I'd be happy to put out there even if he's not a big scorer. Cole too. IMO after Richards they were the only B+ forwards out there. For the habs, Cole sure fits with the speed-based team concept.
Leino has no upside really. He got easy minutes on a stacked Philly team.

I dunno where this comes from, he only played >ONE< season out of Carolina, so where do you get that he never played well out of carolina? That one season btw was with Edmonton, no one would have played well there at the time, still he managed 16 goals in some 60 games.

Last season he scored 26 goals. I don't see how anyone can say he's not still good, that's a mere 4 goals off his carrear high 30.

Why do people keep saying this? He played freaking 60 games on a completely broken and **** team.

In the case of Cole, it's steap because I think there were probably many suiters.

Awesome. I really don't think there was another player on the market who would've been a better fit on this team than Erik Cole.

Plus I've always been a big fan of his.

Our salary cap is increased for the next 4 years with that signing and there are very few elite centers you can get on the UFA market, Brad Richard was one, next one could be in 3-4 years from now.. Trades are basically impossible to do, so you have to have one in your system and unless Leblanc develop in a P.Bergeron type of center, we are stuck with Gomez for the next 3 years..

To be fair to him. He was a total bust in Edmonoton but was there less than a year. The habs play a very particular system. Bit soon to write him off. He had a very good year last year, especially 5 on 5.

I will always admit when I am wrong.

PG totally proved me wrong on this one. Did not expect him to sign a power forward. This is hopefully going to improve our team.

However, we really need to sign a gritty bottom 6 player who can stand up for our team-mates. Do you guys think PG will sign a bottom 6 tough player?

Yeah, I meant to say "Leino's offensive upside is still a big question." Because it really is. Cole may only have hit 30 once, but Leino has yet to hit 20. Significant difference.

Cole is a player that exactly that fits into the Montreal mold. He plays the speed game, and goes to the net - throw in the fact that he's a big body and it's a great fit. Really looking forward to see him in the Habs uniform.

I can see Eller having Cole on the wing in a few years.

Gomezs aura attracts everything from FA's to the sick and weary looking for healing.

That's the reality of the FA crop this off-season. If you want to land the player, you need to overpay.

like i said earlier, money isnt the big problem, i just hope he can be consistent over the term he has signed.
someone mentioned he's a good playoff performer, his stats surely dont reflect that. 14 pts (6+8) in 43 gp.

i don't hate the signing but i'm certainly not loving it either. it fills an immediate need so im happy with the management in the sense that they were proactive.

Cole is clearly the better fit for us. Wouldn't have been happy with a comparable contract to Leino.

Gomez lured Gionta. Gionta lured Cole.

Gomez wins again.

I love it! Habs killer and has size, some grit and skill. He played 82 games last year.

Ryder got 3.5million, if you think someone offered Cole 1.5million you are beyond help.

Cole is a top 6 25-30 proven goal scorer with a physical edge and size. Want to try that again?

I would've considered either player a concrete attempt to add size and depth to our offensive forward group. Cole's definitely a better fit for our system and has the higher upside. Leino doesn't have durability issues. Both contracts are too long, but in today's cap world if you've got the cap room and the willingness to spend, I consider both these guys acquisitions not mistakes. Buffalo's done a lot to get better. I wonder if Toronto's getting desperate to sign Richards at this point. If they don't they're in danger of falling pretty clearly behind Bos, Mtl and Buf in terms of on-paper lineups. Have to play the season, of course...

Compared to Leino and Fleischmann contracts...very nice! We have the luxury of dressing Kostitysn on the 3rd line....That is depth!

Just need a Konopka or Stewart now.

Really pleased with the signing. Now round up the team and lets go. We now have three legitimate lines.

Great skater. Great hitter. Has nearly 300 points at NHL level.

What can we ask more from a UFA to play on our top two lines ?

Cole is the perfect fit for what the Habs need. It gives option to huffle lines. He can play on RW or LW.
